Verheiden Talks TEEN TITANS and BSG

"Battlestar Galactica" executive producer Mark Vernheiden has confirmed his part in adapting DC's Teen Titans to the big screen over at Comic Mix. Maniac Joeybaloney passed along the interview which you can find here, where the producer-writer talked about working on the final season of the hit Sci-fi show and his part in trying to rescue Teen Titans out of development hell, where it has long been collecting dust.

CMix: When you go in to pitch something like a Teen Titans movie, isn’t the studio looking for your “take” or “spin” on it? How do you approach a pitch for something like this?

MV: In the case of Teen Titans, its more like how do you see those characters in a live-action movie and how do they react and live in our world?

There’s a lot of ways to go with this, but my "take," if you want to call it that, is to try and make them as real as possible given the circumstances. Possibly a little bit more of a heightened realism in this, much like they’ve done in the comic recently.

The trick is to find a balance between the realism of how they can work in this world so you can connect with them and they feel real to you, and then the fact they have powers, or most of them do, they have fun and do what they do.

We’re not going to make it grim and gritty or anything, but it will have great jeopardy, action and conflict. The bottom line is, we’re going to try and have some fun with it, which is the best way to describe it.

Does anyone watch Battlestar Galactica? I hear it is really good, I just have never gotten into it, and I love sci-fi....I used to watch Teen Titans on, I think it was cartoon netwrok. I always enjoyed it, would not mind seeing this as a movie at all.

BSG is finally back on tomorrow! I wonder if the time it's been off the air will effect it's ratings? I guess it does not matter being last season and all.

TT is not needed yet since all the big characters are not done yet for solo movies for DC. Unless it's a toon movie for kids. DC better wake up and put more DC movies out there like Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, etc. Not to mention getting that JLA movie out there.

Whiskeymovie- Battlestar Galactica is frakkinnnnnnnn sweeeeeeet! Like Dazzler said the final season starts tommorow. DVR the first couple of eps while you get up to date with the BSG universe. Rent them over at Netflix and watch away.

I didn't watch the Teen Titans cartoon, sounds cool what they are planning to do with this. Nightwing? sweet. Action? wohoo!
What WB needs to do is take the cast from the Justice League movie and give them the teen titans roles and then recast JL.

Whiskey, I don't watch much tv but was persuaded by friends to watch BSG and I regret being so late to the party. One of the best sci/fi series ever IMO. Sci/Fi channel has been replaying most of the shows this week and if you don't want to devote the time it would take to catch up, today between 7 pm and 11pm they're going to recap the whole series. I guess between commercial breaks of the movie they're playing.
I guess if Nightwing is going to be involved he's not going to go with the original team. I'm not that a big a fan of the current team, too many members IMO. Either way I don't see this getting off the ground for a very long time. They may wait to see how the JLA film performs before giving this the greenlight I would think. Anyway if they ever make it I'll be front and center.

A few thoughts from another late arrival to the BSG 'party.' --

My friends have been pushing for me to watch Battlestar since season one -- but I resisted. At the same time, I have been telling one of my friends how enjoyable the new Doctor Who series has been. So we made a deal -- he'd give 'Who' a try if I did the same for BSG. He gave me the first season a few days before this past Christmas and I was immediately hooked. Even funnier, my wife got into it as well. We've been going nuts waiting for season 3 to come out -- trying like mad to avoid any spoilers for season 4. Now that we've watched it, we're rabid with excitement for tomorrow's premiere.

This show is a must watch, Whiskey. And if Verheiden's leading the charge on a TT movie -- which follows the comic material moreso than the cartoon -- then it will be a success.

Whiskey, BSG is indeed great. It's not an action packed Sci-fi adventure series like a Star Trek, Stargate, or Babylon 5. They avoid all the typical Sci-fi plotlines and cliches of monster aliens, time travel and technobabble and take it from the viewpoint of "What if this REALLY happened?" It's a show based around human drama and interaction of people dealing with a 9/11 type event for all humanity and the meaning of human-like artificial enemies that could be your best friend...or you. If that appeals to you, give it a try.But you're gonna have to rent the previous seasons.
I didn't even know that a TT movie was even in the mix. It sounds like Vernheiden has the right idea about how to do it, though.

My pleasure Jarrod!
LOL hanso – that was my first thoughts when I read the article myself. Just slide that JLA (sorry, JLM) cast on over to the Titans!
I kinda got a cart-before-the-horse feel what with all the issues getting Justice League Whatever off the ground but obviously having someone like Vernheiden on board is a huge frakkin’ plus. Nice to read he’s looking at the Wolfman/Perez era for inspiration! Metalwater’s gonna bust a nut over that one : )
Looking forward to hearing more about this!
Let me toss my 2 cents in there Whiskey – BSG is a phenomenal show. Looking forward to sitting down with it from start to finish once it’s over. Really intelligently written and oddly relevant to our world today. I was prepared to hate because of the whole re-imagining thing but they had me with the first part of the original mini. Great stuff!

My only concern appearing on the BSG horizon is that they will build so much up and not be able to deliver. I never realized until I watched a recent interview with Ronald D. Moore that it is not a finite series (a la B5.) Yes they are ending it after season 4 yes, but by choice, not design.

But I believe it's a fantastic show and I have complete faith they will "bring it home" in satisfying fashion.

After his work on TNG and DS9 followed by this, I'd say he's building quite the legacy as a generational sci fi steward.

As for Teen Titans, I can't speak much to the book for the last decade or so (I was a casualty of the "great upheaval" in the '90s) but the characterizations and storytelling from the original Wolfman / Perez New Teen Titans years would provide good source material...particularly the Judas Contract.

Well, it sounds like it could be as good as, if not better than Firefly....I downloaded the first season of BSG, so after I am done with Season 6 of 24, I will start on BSG......from what everyone is saying, I can't wait to see it now,,,,cool,,,,thanks everyone.

BSG in T-MINUS 34 hrs. (on PST)
SWEET, been waiting too long for it. I'm watching 4 hours of BSG tomorrow. Startin' as soon as I get home till I go to bed.

On the subject of this Teen Titan thread, I thought they had already cast this movie, and were calling it JLA...
