TV Wasteland: Let the LOST and Heroes Comparisons Begin - Nov 13, 2008 - 02:50am
Lost is the better show- period. I am a fan of both, and I have watched every episode of both. Lost is better written and better acted. Heroes' problem is that they did not go beyond their "leaping off the pages of a comic book" premise. They wallowed in what comics have done or are doing, but they didn't bring many fresh ideas to the genre.
I have not had nearly as many moments that got me emotional (nearly crying, being shocked, being happy) with Heroes as I did with Lost. My test of whether a show is good or not (besides the writing) is whether the show gets me wrapped up in the story it's telling. Heroes could be telling a great story, but they're just not trying. It's OK for a geek show, to watch people have super powers, but beyond that I feel nothing.
I hope that the firing of two people in the Heroes crew means something, because I really want to see Heroes come back, and become better than it ever was.
Adult Swim Bolsters Anime Offerings - Nov 06, 2008 - 06:44pm
It's a step in the right direction. Put the classics and older shows on later and the new shows up first. I'm glad CN didn't abandon anime.
I would like multiple showings, though.
Fox Unveils New Trailer for Whedon's DOLLHOUSE - Nov 06, 2008 - 06:33pm
So, by "tweaking," Whedon meant sexing up the show? This looks like they wanted to focus on straight up action and getting some suggestive sexuality into what Whedon originally wanted to do. I just hope it's good.
Mendes to give voice to PREACHER feature - Oct 31, 2008 - 07:49am
I would just hope and pray that Preacher is put into good hands and is not bastardized to the point that it's completely neutered and indistiguishable from the book.
Howard calls getting Cheadled the "Surprise of a lifetime" - Oct 19, 2008 - 10:49am
I feel like protesting this sequel, but I loved Iron Man too much too! How are they going to explain this? Are they just going to act like one black man looks like a totally different looking black man and continue on? I bet when I see this sequel in theaters, there will be a few people who are suprised that Howard is gone.
I don't see Cheadle as a guy in an action role. Funny, because that's what people would say about Robert Downey Jr. I know Cheadle's been in that terrorism movie recently, but for me, Cheadle's an actor in dramas, maybe a light comedy. I don't see Cheadle doing the cliche "Whoo hoo" when he puts on that War Machine suit. I think Cheadle's closer to how James Rhodes looks, but he doesn't seem like someone who would put up with Tony Stark's antics.
Maybe if I wake up tommorow, everything will go back to the way it was before.
MY OWN WORST ENEMY: Breakdown - Oct 16, 2008 - 08:15am
After seeing the first episode, I don't think it'll be appointment TV for me. I like that the promos leading up to the show don't reveal that the whole dual personality program is already screwed up. I don't know how long they can hold onto this premise and where they could go with it. Is Henry always going to be in danger because he can't defend himself? Will Henry have to get trained to protect himself while Edward is "asleep?" Will the personalities merge?
I like the premise quite a bit, but the writing is what I want to be there, and it's not, really. I can buy Christian Slater as an action hero, but the writing has to make me feel for his fake personality, this Henry guy.
TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES: Goodbye to All That - Oct 08, 2008 - 07:41pm
It's gotten easier to kill terminators because BAG's not fucking playing! I love Brian Green on this show. His character's a seasoned vet when it comes to killing terminators, so just one terminator's no sweat for him, I think.
My problem was that John and Reese got accepted into a school with fake credentials, no problem? Come on!
Short Set for Murtaugh's Son in LETHAL WEAPON 5? - Oct 07, 2008 - 08:26am
I want to think that this would be a good movie, but this has cheesefest written all over it. I liked Lethal Weapon 4, though, so who am I to crap on this so soon?
Crunchyroll and Gonzo to Simulcast Linebarrels of Iron - Oct 06, 2008 - 06:59am
I wish Gonzo just did this on youtube and not Crunchyroll. From what I've heard of the old Crunchyroll, I'm not completely willing to go with them as a source of anime. Still, if they have the agreement with the actual company, I'm for it.
TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES: Allison from Palmdale - Oct 01, 2008 - 06:41am
I think this was not a C episode at all. I don't care that Sarah wasn't really in this episode. I don't care that her name's on the show, but it's not great at all times whenever she's on it.
I do agree that John should have freaked out a bit more that Cameron was broken, but he does say when he first finds her that she needs to be repaired, and then when they are in the car, Camreron realized that she fucked up, and John agrees with her.
Governator Ready to Rejoin PREDATOR? - Sep 22, 2008 - 08:10am
I've seen the pics of how Arnold looks without keeping in shape. I wonder if he can come back from not regularly working out and being Governor for so long? I'd love to see a Predator 3, this time with humans totally taking it to the Predators in a war.
FRINGE: The Same Old Story - Sep 18, 2008 - 07:18am
This was much improved over the pilot, which wasn't bad at all, but not as impressive. This was creepy and freaky. I hope they're not just going for gross out stuff, though.
PRISON BREAK: Scylla/Breaking and Entering - Sep 04, 2008 - 05:41am
I love Prison Break for everything but what matters: the actual story. This should have not gone beyond the Prison Break of the first season. To bring back everyone is a worse stretch in logic than when high school drama shows keep the characters together through some odd circumstances.
Prison Break is basically more fictional than fiction, and at this point it's a crazy fantasy. Still I love it. I agree that Michael Rappaport, simply from how his voice sounds, doesn't fit with this show. He's a comedic actor who doesn't come off very believable as a straight, serious man. I guess since The War at Home didn't come back, he got thrown into this show.
Also, the whole Sara thing was dumb as hell. I felt that she doesn't even need to be there anymore except to play "Michael's girl." I bet they kill her off- this time for good.
I also have to say that the show cannot be called Prison Break anymore! It's so stupid! I give this ep a C.
Mumbling Kitsune: Sympathy for Kira? - Jul 07, 2008 - 05:33pm
I was disappointed by Death Note anime's end. I know that he was just a man after all, but I didn't even like that L died so soon into the show. So why can't evil win? Also, why don't we see more of the Shinigami world?
This felt like the show wrapped up so soon. Damn, I wish it ended when Kira killed L and the others halfway in the series.
RZA Teams with Eli Roth for MARTIAL ARTS Film - Jul 07, 2008 - 06:35am
RZA always brings fire when he does soundtracks. I would love to see a martial arts film from America that knocks my socks off. It's been a while.
Box Office: HANCOCK Flies into July 4th Victory - Jul 06, 2008 - 01:38pm
I read bad reviews on this, so I stayed clear. Wow, Will Smith beats those critics, doesn't he? He did better than the new Hulk movie did!
The Mumbling Kitsune: Needs More Robots - Jun 29, 2008 - 05:44am
I remember when Big Guy and Rusty was a saturday morning cartoon. Sadly, like most cartoons, it did not last very long. At least it lasted longer than the new Astro Boy did on Saturdays.
The Manic Maniac: The Comic Book is Dead - Jun 27, 2008 - 06:13am
I can't cosign on you with this one. We were all so cocky back when personal computers became popular in the mainstream. We said "paper is dead." Not only do we still pump out paper, we even have all these great stocks of paper we can print out on!
Don't call comics dead on the table yet, because without the Batman: Year one comic, Batman Begins might have not been what it was. Also, this new shared universe of movies Marvel is planning (Iron Man > Hulk > Thor > Captain America >Avengers) might not have been possible without the Ultimates line of books as an example.
I don't think that comic books are dead, but they need to be reformed. At the peak of comics, they were million sellers. Now the most popular comic can hope for a 100K readership.
Marvel and DC have realized that they need to give the kids more and get them interested. We have a new Spider-man Cartoon and we have Iron Man, Brave & the Bold and X-men cartoons upcoming. Also, Marvel and DC have more titles in their kids lines of comics.
Their big competition is the internet and video games, so good luck.
CLOVERFIELD 2 On Hold, 300 Prequel Coming - Jun 26, 2008 - 06:42am
Even though I liked 300 more than Cloverfield, I think a Cloverfield sequel is needed more than a 300 prequel.
Hulk Fight Breakdown: Norton vs. Universal - Jun 15, 2008 - 06:58pm
Thanks for posting this. I'm enjoying seeing what could have been (and how critics would have said about it) if Norton had gotten his way. I'm in the midst of reading the article now. I hope this stuff cut out will appear on the DVD.
Splitting Superman: The Siegel Victory - Apr 03, 2008 - 08:33am
I'm glad that the whole Siegel and Schuster issue has made some progress, finally. This has affected both parties so much, and it was starting to get annoying. Good for everyone involved.
McConaughey Is the New MAGNUM P.I? - Apr 03, 2008 - 08:25am
Well, if they HAVE to pimp out the Magnum PI name, I think Matthew fits the character better than anyone I can think of.
Plus, he'll have lots of opportunities to take his shirt off and/or be in nothing but a towel.
Millar and Gough Exit SMALLVILLE - Apr 03, 2008 - 08:22am
Why leave now? Took them long enough. I don't want to be negative about Smallville, so I'll applaud them for their long run on the show instead.
No Zod, No Constantine and No FF 3 - Mar 28, 2008 - 07:13am
I'm going to be pissed if there is no real threat in the next Superman. I hated the dumb baby angle, and if there's no supervillian for Superman to tangle with, I have to wonder why Bryan Singer Jumped ship on the X-franchise.
NARUTO SHIPPUDEN - Feb 17, 2008 - 02:04pm
I'm watching Naruto and Bleach as they air on Cartoon Network. My problem with huge shounen fighting shows like this is that there is so much filler I hear about and I just want to get into the story, without fluff.
I've basically given up on watching Bleach, because it takes too much time to get back to the meat of the story.
I can't wait to see Shippuden. I love the idea of the main characters being older. I just wish there was some way that Cartoon Network would bypass the filler eps.
CLOVERFIELD - Jan 20, 2008 - 12:52pm
I want to go all the way back to mckracken's response. Why is it that the audience's response factors into how you responded to it. They wanted a different ending and they didn't get it. If you REALLY REALLY don't like a movie, you don't sit through the whole thing, even if it's less than an hour and a half long.
It's your money. People do get their money back if they hate a movie, even if they've seen the whole thing.
Anime BATMAN Set In Between BB & DK - Aug 19, 2007 - 03:46pm
I'm totally cool with it, and I think they're going to be more "mature" with this, not all chibi and goofy like Teen Titans. Not that there was anything wrong with Teen Titans' style.
Batman TAS was one of the best action cartoons, period. I think The Batman cartoon on the WB is trying to live up to that, and I don't mind having more animated incarnations of Batman.
More young people need to know that characters like Batman exist and come from comic books. I hope this helps.
Harold Perrineau Returns to LOST - Jul 26, 2007 - 08:07pm
I don't mind this particular spoiler much, because viewers of Lost knew that Walt and Michael's story couldn't end that way, especially since Walt showed up this season.
CONNOR CHRONICLES' Scene to be Redone - Jul 23, 2007 - 08:06pm
Yech. Why do that? I don' think that anyone is really going to be reminded of Virginia Tech by the time this show is out.
What they need to do is make this show watchable. That's the only changes I want.
G.I JOE Update With Cobra - Jul 15, 2007 - 06:36pm
They have to keep the basics to get me to see it. How can you screw up GI Joe? Sure, you have to update the situation, but it's Cobras Vs Joes, period. I would love to see a young Joe team going against the foundations of Cobra. All you need is a bit of CGI and a lot of gunfire.
Heroes: Landslide - May 19, 2007 - 05:09pm
My only problem with this ep was the whole Hiro thing. You can't learn anything in a few hours, especially how to properly fight with a weapon. This isn't Dragonball Z, so there's no hyperbaric time chamber!
Jackson Catches THE SPIRIT - May 19, 2007 - 05:05pm
The whole point of Octopus is that his identity is never revealed, right? So if Jackson's basically playing a voice, then I don't see that as making a significant change for the character. If he was the Spirit, that would be wrong casting, not just because he's black, but because he's too old.
"Heroes: Parasite" - Mar 09, 2007 - 08:32am
A few comments
1. There's no way that anyone could dislike this episode. The best yet, and a great cliffhanger to stop at.
2. I am calling BS on Tim Kring. This guy's closet must be filled to the brim with comics. The character who shape-shifts? She was totally Mystique from the Brotherhood. Maybe someone else throws these ideas in, but I've always been skeptical about Kring alleging that he's not really read comics.
3. How can you not like Hiro? Maybe you don't like him when he's being all goofy and japanese, but there's a lot more to him than comic relief. He's getting more powerful, and I believe he's the only one who can get close enough to sylar to kill him. Really, he has the most useful powers, but if Peter gets his ability, then he might not be as useful.
4. Remember when future Hiro comes back and mentions peter's "scar?" Is the scar Sylar gave Peter the scar he's referring to?
5. Is Linderman connected with the company? He has to be, right? A guy so mentioned in conversation has to be involved with him. However, no Company guys ever mention him.
6. Nikki is finally getting interesting.Yeah, i said it Also, i read that the whole double personality thing is coming to an end, which is great.
7. Like Nikki, Matt is not being used as well as the more popular characters. The actor who plays him is capable, but he's still being used as something of a bumbler.
"Lost: Enter 77" - Mar 09, 2007 - 08:13am
I think it was a bit ridiculous for Locke to not guard a dangerous person in favor of a game, but you have to remember that he was all for inputting the numbers at the other Dharma station.
He's 0 for 2 in keeping a dharma station in the condition he left it. He's just not having any luck!
"Prison Break: Wash" - Mar 02, 2007 - 03:10pm
I don't think that C-note is actually dead. We don't see him die, and I think the editing leads us to believe that someone's coming to save his life.
I think that Prison Break is so totally unbelievable that at this point the only way you should judge it is on the acting.
"Lost: Tricia Tanaka is Dead" - Mar 02, 2007 - 02:57pm
I think that this show was good, and the main reason is that it brought a little happiness after all the darker episodes this season. The castaways have been looking like they just can't win, and giving Hurley a good day was called for.
As for Cheech Marin's performance, I think that he was just fine. I think that the flashback scenes were funny (and gross, with Hurley's parents still sexually active) and I think where young Hurley connects junk food to his feelings of loneliness and abandonment was a nice detail to throw in.
I wonder if Hurley would be the skinny funny guy on the island if his dad didn't leave.
"LOST: Not in Portland" - Feb 09, 2007 - 08:43pm
I think above all that Juliet's flashback was the real meat of this episode. Whatever this company that eventually becomes the Others is, they are SCARY.
This was not a strong episode, but that's what happens when a season is broken up.
I wonder if we'll ever see the big boss of the others (the guy who appeared in the flashback) and if they explain how powerful the others are.
The guy being hit by the bus just came out of nowhere, so to speak.
Does the whole baby breaktthrough Juliet perfected mean that Juliet and Claire's lives crossed paths at one point? And who provides the genetic material for women like Juliet's sister to get pregnant?
If you look back to one of the Claire focused flashbacks, a woman is frightened at Claire's pregnancy. Is it because Claire's baby is a clone or some sort of virgin birth?
Katie Holmes drops out of "The Dark Knight" - Jan 26, 2007 - 06:08pm
GOOD! All we cared about was her pokey nipples anyway! She wasn't exactly setting the screen on fire with her part in Batman Begins. Who needs her, anyway? The Bruce Wayne character's a playboy, so just hire another pretty face.
I guess the Queen Latifah movie's going to get her an Oscar.
:)
Katie hasn't been relevant since Dawson's Creek. Screw her.
"Prison Break: John Doe" - Jan 26, 2007 - 05:47pm
Wow, Prison Break gets even more unbelievable from episode to episode! With 24 and Prison Break on at the same time, it's the most escapist night on television.
How can they even go on trying to prove Linc innocent now? It's all but impossible! They say that all the guys close to this conspiracy had their lives erased, so the only person left is a member of the president's cabinet.
Can anyone really get close enough to the White House to attempt to coax out a confession?
"Prison Break: The Killing Box" - Dec 03, 2006 - 05:20pm
I missed the finale, so I might have to check out fox.com and watch it. The story is just so far fetched and impossible that it's great. I thought that 24 was nuts, but this show defies common sense. All these dudes would be dead, save for Michael, who would be in prison for life.
Still, I love it. It's true escapism.
HBO Keeps Getting My Money - Dec 03, 2006 - 05:13pm
Buying so many good books are hideously expensive, but luckily library collections of graphic novels are growing. And with preacher coming to HBO and talk of Watchmen becoming a movie, I won't have to collect all this stuff!
Hidden Anime - Nov 25, 2006 - 03:51pm
FF VII had CGI cutscenes. No anime.
Exhaustion Explosion - Nov 07, 2006 - 11:08am
Comics need a fucking 25 cent book day-every year. I'm happy that comics are coming back in a big way, but I think that kids need to get back into reading, and reading comics is a great way to get kids into reading all other types of printed media.
Weekend Box Office Report: "Borat" Surprises - Nov 06, 2006 - 12:31pm
Good for Cohen. I heard "Borat" on the radio and he was hilarious. I just hope they don't pressure him for more and his characters wear out their welcome.
Have you “LOST” interest? - Nov 06, 2006 - 08:24am
it's just you and me, narpin. A lot of people want answers and they want the focus to be more on the main characters. I've loved every season and I think there's little this season that I didn't like. One thing that bugged me was the whole "two islands" idea. It makes perfect sense, but getting there didn't really. I'd have to watch a repeat of season 2's finale.
I also HATE that the show is going away for a drama that has the most ridiculous premise for an ongoing series. I suspect that no one will care and we'll be watching Lost reruns for about 3 months. From what I've seen of this Taye Diggs debacle, 7 Days did the premise first, and it did it better. Another Taye Diggs failure.
"American Virgin" - Nov 04, 2006 - 06:54pm
I really liked the first volume of American Virgin. When I read the first few pages, I thought it would simply be the story of a religious young man avoiding sexual temptation. When a certain event happens, however, the story just goes whacko.
The only problem I had with Volume one was a scene on a plane where Adam is tempted yet again by a magazine. The guy who owns the magazine is not realistic enough of a character and he's just used as an excuse for Adam to get his hands on this book.
OLDBOY - Nov 04, 2006 - 06:48pm
Oldboy is just great. I would love for Americans to make more dramas of this type.
Final Fantasy 12 - Nov 04, 2006 - 06:32pm
Hey, Korinthian! Don't ruin my high. I did hear the concerns you talk about in a professional gaming magazine, so it's not news to me, but you playing the game before me and not linking it is going to drive me insane.
I'm a hardcore FF fan. I started with 7, played one of the classic games and i also played FF tactics advance, and I love them all.
Even if FF XII has some boring elements to it, I'll still dig it.
I think that out of all the FF games, I liked parts of the FF 8 battle system the best, even though the story wasn't nearly as good as the others in the series.
Smallville Season 6 Premiere - Oct 07, 2006 - 07:30pm
I think that Smallville should have been done in a planned number of seasons, instead of all the stuff they make up.
How many times can Lex or Lana or Chloe get kidnapped before they realize "fuck it, I'm leaving smallville!" It's ridiculous- and yet I still tune in.
And to answer the question, I think that Lex as Zod could fly because Zod probably knew how to fly in previous experiences. He is a badass.
Speaking of zod, I think that was stupid as well. It would have been better if they stuck with brainiac, had him trying to cripple the world. They're trying to cram everything that'll get people to watch, rather than trying to tell the story of clark before he was the big hero. It doesn't have to be pure Dawson's creek, but why recyle situations over and over for the sake of action?
Lost is the better show- period. I am a fan of both, and I have watched every episode of both. Lost is better written and better acted. Heroes' problem is that they did not go beyond their "leaping off the pages of a comic book" premise. They wallowed in what comics have done or are doing, but they didn't bring many fresh ideas to the genre.
