Apparently Sandy Collora is some kind of art director on movies like Guyver2 and wanted to show off his directing chops. I also read that he intentionally went with a look for Batman inspired by Alex Ross' comic art. I noticed that the Joker has the same look as created by Dave Mckean in Arkham Asylum; truly a comic lovers wet dream.
