Black Rain (1989) Sato is captured

Description:
This is the end of the movie where Conklin chases Sato on a motorcycle, fights with him and then turns him in at the police station. This scene is memorable because it shows Conklin coming full circle to redeem himself. He came to Japan as a racist cop ("Bring me a nip who can speak fucking English") accused of being on the take. In the end, he comes to adopt the Japanese ways of respect and honor--bowing to the chief as he accepts his award for capturing Sato. At the airport he shakes hands with Detective Matsumoto Masahiro (Ken Takakura) before walking away. When Matsumoto opens a gift box handed to him by Conklin, he finds the missing counterfeiting plates-- which would have been worth a fortune to whoever possessed them. This symbolizes Conklin's redemption as a police officer since he had the chance to kill Sato instead of turning him in. The story resonates with positive themes as the two men, who were at each other's throats throughout the movie come to respect each other. The Japanese detective having learned to shed his conformity and adopt American ways.
