It seems average box office returns can't keep a good Furyan warrior down. The Pitch Black spin-off The Chronicles of Riddick was the first of a planned trilogy based on the warrior played by Vin Diesel but poor box office returns in 2004 cast doubt on whether we would be seeing the character again. The film had a $105 mil budget and wound up only grossing $115.8 mil worldwide. Well, apparently, that's not stopping writer David Twohy from planning out the story for the next two sequels, reports Vin Diesel to MTV. The only question at the moment is how they go about producing the next two sequels.
"David Twohy right now is writing the scripts. The only question is whether we take a page from the 'Lord of the Rings' guys and try to shoot the two chapters at the same time. There are two more in mind," he said of Riddick, the Furyan warrior first introduced in the 2000 film "Pitch Black." "'The Chronicles of Riddick' was presented as a three part trilogy that would answer 'Pitch Black' in the same way that 'Lord of the Rings' answered 'The Hobbit.'"
Diesel has his next sci-fi adventure Babylon A.D. hitting theaters this weekend.
I swear I want to just F***ing choke this guy! How the F*** do you so screwup a born to be inconic character like Riddick? The pile of horse $#! that was Chronicles doesn't deserve two sequels! I say pretend that Chronicles didn't happen and make up some reason to send him back to the planet ala "Aliens"!
Riddick never struck me as a character "born to be iconic." He's not an Indiana Jones, Luke Skywalker, Bruce Wayne, or Clark Kent. He didn't really have any depth or complexity to his character at all. That said, I really enjoyed Chronicles of Riddick and always wished sequels had been made. I liked its mythology and wanted it to continue. I would definitely check out Riddick 2 and 3 if they're ever made.
Iconic? I never saw Riddick that way which is probably one of the reasons I liked the movie.
I would love the sequals get made, Vin you are the man and I love that you have the same geek tastes the rest of us do but somewhere your movies are getting lost in translation. Something tells me if you want the sequals to get made your Babylon A.D. movie better put up good numbers. There isn't much competition this weekend and its a holiday so there is a chance. The only thing I see hurting the chances are the promotion for this movie...the French seem to have most of the press for this movie...and yes I know it was a French author who wrote the book but B.O. numbers in the U.S. are much more important than the Frog country.
I'm all for more Riddick. I thought Chronicles was lacking a lot but the universe and Riddick's adventures I think have a lot of potential. <BR itxtvisited="1" />A trip to the underverse might be cool. Just a lot of ways to go here. I hope they do the sequels. <BR itxtvisited="1" /><BR itxtvisited="1" />Hobbs, I don't think Babylon is going to do what they hope it would, at least if you go by the director's comments. I remember you said you read the book and may regret it for the let down in translation to film, you may have been right. Check it out if you want<BR itxtvisited="1" />http://blogs.amctv.com/scifi-scanner/2008/08/babylon-ad-mathieu-kassovitz.php
The whole Riddick things seems like a lot of potential that nobody has yet to figure out how to capitalize on. Have only seen a bit of Pitch Black, but always heard great things about it. Went to see Chronicles of Riddick and was left wondering what all the buzz was about.
Chronicles of Riddick was a disappointment. I really like Pitch Black, but it was a totally different film. Chronicles just seemed to bite off more than it could chew. All that aside, I would check out the sequels because I'm a sci fi fan.
I'm with Wise though. I don't think Babylon is going to be the money vacuum Vin needs it to be. The trailer didn't excite me that much. I wonder if there are boobs in that movie?
"Chronicles" was on over the weekend and the word that came up in my mind is: potential. Can't quite put my finger on what was wrong with it though. It's like they started epic and then worked their way to a smaller story with the whole prison escape thing.
They gotta get the right script worked out and proceed from there. I say give it a chance, this franchise is salvageable.
I always thought that Chronicles of Riddick painted itself into a corner. Riddick is now High Lord Marshal of the Necromongers. Where do you go from there??
The only idea I can think of is that Riddick travels to the Underverse and finds a greater threat to the galaxy and has to decide whether he should just get out of town, or follow his destiny and take charge of the Necros, and lead a battle for the survival of the universe.
I'm with you Wiseguy. Interesting world and I'd see more even though the last was just ok. I still watch it from time to time on TV. It's nothing like Pitch Black, but it wasn't supposed to be.
Good point, Moz, what are the next two movies about?
