The Manic Maniac: Crichton's Legacy - Nov 07, 2008 - 08:53am
Very true Nell. I too thought about that dilema of no new novels which is sad. However I do have one saving grace for myself. I have read all his titles up to Timline except the Lost World. Every title since then I have not had a chance to read yet so I feel lucky that I will still get to discover his later novels which will still be brand new to me.
BTW Eaters of the Dead is a great read, if you haven't had a chance to read it.
Establishing a No-Fly Zone - Nov 07, 2008 - 08:41am
Glad to see you taking this path Kurt. I have for a long time been the only one amongst my comic reading friends to stray outside of the Superhero ghetto. I of course still read them but I have been slowly moving out to more confined limited runs and non cape books. This of course is a slow proces because it is very hard to give up any title and just as hard to add when on a budget, as every comic fan knows. Looking forward to getting some additional alternatives to the mainstream.
The Manic Maniac: Crichton's Legacy - Nov 07, 2008 - 07:47am
What is great is inability of people to read entire articles. If you finish reading the article Joe appears to say that while Crichton may not be considered great by many he did the world a solid by making science easy. I have read most of his work and while I really enjoy it and I would always recommend him others I would never put him the same ranks as "Great" writers of this or any generation. Yes all of this is still objective as is all art but to criticize a man for his opinion just because you don't always agree is not "Great" either.
The true measure of greatness will be measured not us but by future generations who may or may not read Crichton's books. Making millions and selling millions doesn't make you "Great" it makes you popular.
Will Smith and Spielberg Remaking OLDBOY - Nov 07, 2008 - 07:14am
This will suck ass! Yes Speilberg is money as is Smith (and regardless of quality this will make boatloadsof cash), but that is not going to make this film work on the same levels as the original. Are they willing to keep one of the big reveals at the end... I don't think so. Here's a better point why even bother? If the original is so great then why remake it? Answer there is none. When I saw this a couple of years ago when it came out I was blown away by how much it affected me. Great story of revenge and shows how low the human spirit can go.
Robert Downey Jr. talks about the Howard/Cheadle incident - Nov 06, 2008 - 12:00pm
Wiseguy562 & Monkeyfoot I totally agree with both you on this. This has now been dragging on for far too long. I really like both Howard and Cheadle but the whole mess should never have happpened or at least this publicly. Hopefully all involved can take a cue from Downey on this and stay classy by just letting go. It's nice to see an adult acting like an adult for a change in Hollywood. Leave all the stupid rhetoric to the fanboys.
Morgan and Goode talk WATCHMEN - Oct 06, 2008 - 08:29am
Hanso you are 100% right. I love the book and most things written by Alan Moore but he needs to calm down just a little about his work being unfilmable. I really hope that this movie owns all of next year like TDK did this year. And having the one of the best written comic stories ever as source material it's hard not to be excited.
Top Maniacal Rumors: Clooney Ranger, Romero Returns and Knight Prepping - Oct 03, 2008 - 07:45am
Hanso---The rumour is that it would take place at the Battle of Plataea. Which takes place between the events of the Battle of Thermopylae and the end of the film where the story is being told. That scene is supposed to take place just prior to the Battle of Plataea. The Greeks again outnumbered in this case only 3:1 against the Persians.
1. No to Clooney. Like him but can't see it.
2. Yes to more Romero Zombie flicks.
3. GL better own. That's it!
4. Who cares about Dunst. I have always loved how much her name sounds like dunce. LOL!
5. Likes others have said when Nolan speaks then I'll care.
FRINGE: The Same Old Story - Sep 18, 2008 - 07:29am
Ponyboy76
"Maybe I am crazy but did the show end with flash image of an half of an apple?"
Yes it did. If you watch at the commercial breaks they also have little graphics. What is really cool is looking deeper at them to discover that the apple seeds at the core are 2 fetuses, the frog has some kind of logo on it's back and the butterfly's wings. Still not sure if it will somehow tie in or is just JJ misdirection. But still I think it's a cool addition to a very promising show.
Also looking forward to learning whether or not Jackson is a clone too or he engineered his intellect for the pattern.
Comicscape: Warner Bros. Takes DC to the Movies - Aug 27, 2008 - 10:59am
I have no problem with the darker tone as long as it pertains to the villains, storyline hell even parts of Metropolis... BUT Supes can not, I repeat CAN NOT be darker. He is the one ray light in the DCU and should stay that way. Is Batman and certain other characters cooler - ABSOLUTELY! but that doesn't mean we need to make the Boyscout the same. There is a reason that he like Batman have been so popular over the years. They represent specific traditions and icons. Kal-El has over 70yrs of established continuity to reference... USE IT!
Use the real Lex not the real estate wuss. Use Parasite, Darkseid, Brainiac or Metallo but ensure they are really evil. Not just oh look some passerby's coming lets use them against Superman. Make them truly evil have them conspire amongst themselves or together as a tandem with Lex... except Darkseid he must be used on his own. Or how about having Supes team up with Lex or Brainiac against Darkseid that would create some great tension and moral issues for Superman. There it is, there is your trilogy...
Part 1: Superman reboot with an evil business tycoon/smartest man on earth Lex Luthor running Lexcorp and the maybe the government. Fights with Superman using his advanced science and weapons he has developed since the first appearance of Superman. Believing that this only marks the beginning of the eventual subjugation of earth by Krypton. Lex builds Metallo with his Kryptonite heart to battle Superman. Have moments during the film where Lex has made Superman look and feel responsible for some catastrophe. Also use this to start bridge into the eventual JLA film. Having Jonn Jonzz cameo to discuss his idea with Supes.
Part 2: After defeating Lex's plans in the first film he is taken to prison only to escape head north to find a way to defeat Superman when he finds the remnants of Brainiac and reconstructs it to use against Superman. Great drama with Superman learning that Brainiac is the reason Krypton was destroyed and is going to do the same to his new home world.
Part 3: In the climatic battle with Brianiac in part 2 something happens that allows Apokolips to have contact with Earth. Darkseid and his parademons attack. After several battles Superman is nearly killed only to learn that Lex Luthor can help him defeat Darkseid. The moral ramifications of these moments would be great if handled correctly. Also you would have one of the greatest epic battles in the history of film. This also leads to other sequels with Lex coming out this battle looking like a hero and becomes President.
Well that's at least what I would do. As it appears many others here on Comicscape. WB please listen to us and stop letting your spreadsheets dictate the stories!
Keitel Leads Department in LIFE ON MARS - Jul 25, 2008 - 08:11am
This seems strange to me. I saw the pilot which had Colm Meaney as Hunt and I thought he was good in the role. However the pilot did duplicate the UK episode pretty closely. I assume that it didn't test well with American viewers so they want to retool it. Which is a shame I thought the original UK version was amazing as it was. Oh well more Hollywood watering down for the masses.
