Richard Branson is getting into the comicbook business via his Virgin Books. Branson is teaming up with Deepak Chopra, filmmaker Shekhar Kapur and Gotham Entertainment Group to launch Virgin Comics and Virgin Animation.

The new companies will "focus primarily on Asia as an area to inspire and create content and drive revenue, though the operation intends to reach a global audience. In addition to creating and publishing comics, the principals plan to take their properties and characters and parlay them into movies, animation, toys, videogames and consumer products."

The first item scheduled to be released is from John Woo. Woo is creating an original comic, which be published under the Virgin Comics' Director's Cut line.

Good luck to them!

Isn't this news item just begging for a fanboy joke? Like how "Virgin Comics" is the perfect name for your average comic reader?

I think the important thing is that they must be doing it for the love of the medium. Clearly they have stories that can only be told in comic book form, and it looks like their main interest is advancing comic books beyond simple movie and TV tie-ins up to new heights that will enhance and strengthen the artform and related genres. I can't wait to buy the first issue for $4.99 once it's been through a couple focus groups.

yeah, "Virgin Comics" is kind of a funny name. Let's hope it's not their first super-hero (God help us, as it might be).

Ever been in a Virgin Store... wow what a huge selection of music and dvd's... it's a rare breed of store.

I have a virgin store 10 minutes away from me, I love going in there.

Maybe Mr. Banson is wanting to supply reading material for when he is flying people on his Galactic Airline.

These are comics that have never been held up with one hand.

*bada bing*

I hear this new Virgin Comic Book line is going to be faptastic. Very fappable for teen readers.

*bada boom*

Thank you! I'm here all weekend. Be sure to tip your server.

Not sure about the love of the medium. Branson sees money to be made and he wants to make it.

*cough* *cough* acclaim comics *cough* *cough*

seriously though, virgin stores has been giving major support to designer vinyl toys so maybe the same will be for comics.

Yeah I agree...who the hell wants to make intriguing story lines and characters for the mere reason of having someone read your life's passion, hell auction it to the highest bitter. And movies, they only serve as cash cows, right? I say we make them cheaper and make the jokes dumber...that way we get a bigger return on investment. And by the way, how much money could we make if we pawned the Mona Lisa?

If you haven't picked up a damn newspaper or seen a show with this Branson's name in it, allow me to inform you that this guy is wealthy, completely and utterly wealthy, for Christ's sake the guy is offering anti-gravity shuttle rides for the future, he blows most of his money attempting to kill himself with pointless stunts and got FOX to give extra lunch money to have a show about ppeople competeing for more of his money. This spoiled rich kid with nothing better to do wants to make a comic book line his next momentary amusement project when men and women who've taken their crafts seriously for decades have struggled just to have their words in print and this bored rich wants something to take up his time...so he can make MORE money that he can waste on MORE pointless stunts?

This guy doesn't give a damn about readers or people he wants to enlarge his own franchise ("movies, animation, toys, videogames"). And I'm sure that with every two comics you get $10 off your next flight on Virgin Airlines.

It may me be just me and if it is I don't care, because I'm sick and tired of little people with lots of paper in their hands that make their sole purpose taking people's money and turn right around to those people and say "sorry 'bout the mishap, here's more crap from us, now give us more of your money"

Here's hoping that people see through the ruse and put this "businesss venture" flat on its face. If he wants something to spend money on, he should make a clothing line for rich people on the go.
