VOLTRON Becomes Cost Efficient for New Regency

By: Jarrod Sarafin
Date: Monday, August 18, 2008

The adaptation of Voltron may be coming out of development hell, reports Variety. The trade reports that New Regency is putting the project into turnaround. Ryan Kavanaugh's financing and production venture Relativity Media is in negotiations to back the property, though on a more moderate budget, utilizing the type of cost-effective technology employed in films including 300. Mark Gordon and Jordan Wynn are still producers for the adaptation of the 1980's Japanese anime while Bryan Zuriff is still executive producing. A director is likely to be announced shortly to lead the film, based on Justin Marks' screenplay.

Plot Concept: Marks' take is described as a post-apocalyptic tale set in New York City and Mexico, where five survivors of an alien attack band together and end up piloting the five lion-shaped robots that combine and form the massive sword-wielding Voltron that helps battle Earth's invaders.

Voltron was the shit as a kid but I`m not sure if you can do something like this on a budget. I would think Voltron would have the same sort of look as Bay's Transformers did. I`m not sure what the budget was, but it was like over $150. 300 had amazing F/X but I don't know if it would work for mechanical looking characters. They tried to do that in The Mutant Chronicles and it looked really grainy. I hope it works out though. I wonder who they`ll get to play Keith. "And I`ll form the head!"

Voltron is only good in toon form. No way a live action will be any good. Exp from Mexico? Was Ares (sp) too way away to shoot?

I agree Pony, I used groove Voltron big time when I was a tyke, but I just wonder if I would still dig it now? A lot of shows a I loved as a kid; G.I. Joe, Thundercats, He-Man, even Transformers somewhat, They just aren't the same as an adult. I think that's why I don't get my undies all knoted when they decide to change something in a movie adaptation. My childhood would not be ruined if they change something on Voltron.

Sniff... "Post Apocolyptic" Sniff... Sniff... "Mexican" Sniff Sniff... "Voltron" Sniff... Sniff... Sniff... Do you smell that? Sniff... Do you smell that? Oh, you smell it too. It smells like shit, yes? Yeah, that's the smell of shit alright.

A little more tweaking... maybe not having it set on Earth may just help, but I am interested in seeing it only if done right. From a production point, doing it much like 300 will help I think.

with an economy priced voltron made from spare parts and a $50 gift card to radio shack, I'm not sure how much a chance the voltron force has against haggar and lotor.

"Marks' take is described as a post-apocalyptic tale set in New York City and Mexico, where five survivors of an alien attack band together and end up piloting the five lion-shaped robots that combine and form the massive sword-wielding Voltron that helps battle Earth's invaders."

Yet another director insists on putting his own stamp on material that would do just fine if left alone. Call it voltron re-mix, but that plotline sounds more like a robotech story rather than the storyline from voltron. I have a nagging suspicion this movie will bomb--i hope for everyone' sake that it doesn't.

I have a nagging suspicion that you are right, bluetiger. It already sounds and smells like shit like Muenster pointed out.

Never was a fan so if it is shit I won't care and if it isn't, well I'll have 2 hours of entertainment.

Basically, I could give a rats ass if this movie is ever made.
