VOLTRON Causes Bidding War

Paramount and Relativity Media want Voltron soon.

When it comes to the next big franchise that could-be for any Hollywood executive, properties that have been around for 30 years are sure to take up large portions of their radar screens. One such possibility is Voltron, a popular title that has been around for nearly that length of time and has been in and out of development hell over the past decade. NY Magazine's Vulture is reporting possible traction for fans of the classic animated series, with several studios entering a bidding war for the feature film rights.

One of the front-runners is Ryan Kavanaugh's Relativity Media, the very same financial backers who tried to set the property up at 20th Century Fox back in 2005 with Mark Gordon overseeing production. That deal eventually fell apart due to legal threats from former TV rights holders, Toei, but Relativity believes they can set it up once again. The report goes on to suggest that if Kavanaugh's latest attempt succeeds, the project would likely be set up at Paramount Pictures.

Time will tell on who brings Voltron to life on the silver screen but with the 30th anniversary rapidly approaching, insiders believe it could happen as early as 2013. Rights-holders World Events are also preparing to air a new series of the property called "Voltron Force" on Nicktoons in May.

Forget it Hollywood you already took a japanese franchise like Dragonball and turn it into shit!! Not to mention Godzilla, but that's a another story...Face it You even mess up so other franchises like Resident Evil, Street Fighter and the list goes on and on...Stop it already!!! It is so hard to see a great series being made to a messed up film..

They are going to screw up Akira also

I love Voltron but I can't see it working.

It all depends on who produces and directs the movie.  Personally, I would like to see a sci-fantasy movie (I'm thinking Krull, Star Wars, etc) with the Voltron lions, but probably wouldn't be done correctly.  Who knows, Hollywood does occasionally surprise.

I would love to see a live action Voltron. I'm sure it'll get screwed up though. A little off topic, but what happened to a live action Thundercats movie?

Calibur454 3/9/2011 7:32:44 AM

You have got to be kidding- havent we learened anything from the last decade in turning animated shows into live action- the bulk of them are plain junk.

A live action thundercats-I wouldn't even bother with- I would stick to the new series coming to tv- the interesting thing here is the new voltron cartoon coming to nick in may. Being heavily edited is a fear but with the usccess of avatar the last airbender- the tv show not the movie- it could work.

If a voltron movie were to come out everyone has there different favorite. If the voltron with cars and space planes are not used those fans will wine and moan. if the lions arent used the same thing. It is a loose loose situation.

I myself would roather see the gatchaman animated film that is currently in limbo. If anyone has seen footage or trailers for it I'm sure you would agree.

Then again i didn't see Transformers movie working at one point.  The story is all screwed up but the realism of the robots is amazing.

If Thundercats has a similar feel as something like Chronicles of Riddick meets Avatar but with a nice and deep storyline it could work.

I think Voltron shouldn't be live action.  Maybe a big budget anime movie with  CG/toonshaded mix.

idk.... i want this to work, but I keep picturing a Power Rangers type of movie...... it's hard for me to see this translate into a live film also.

momitchell7 3/9/2011 10:28:25 AM

Can anyone say Thunderbirds? All I can picture is the goofy giant robots from the Power Rangers franchises. The Voltron cartoons were fun as a kid, but the stories sure don't hold up well, so I really don't see how Hollywood could "ruin" Voltron.

If they used CGI animation used for The Transformers and it had a decent story line, I could see this being pretty awesome - something I'd want to see.

First of all, this should be in the Anime section no? Secondly for everyone screaming about Hollywood screwing this up... Every damn episode of Voltron was exactly the same. Here is a synopses, just in case the formula has escaped you. Bad guys send robeast to attack. Lions engage robeast and get their asses kicked. Lions form Voltron in an incredibly slow process as robeast looks on. Voltron takes a few lumps before figuring out that they need to "Form Blazing Sword" yet again. One slash robeast dies. Bad guys shake their fist and vow revenge. Lions return to castle where the pilots have a good laugh. There is absolutely no depth to any of the Voltron characters other than the same tired characters that exist in all "team type" anime. Handsome and fearless leader, loose cannon/hot head, kid, fat guy, and finally the chick/princess. Ugg its all so tiresome and stupid. "Hollywood" will have to find a way to flesh out these superficial characters because the source material is bad. By the time the writers jam in the prerequisite love triangle between the fearless leader, the hothead, and the princess, and the comedy arc with the kid and the fat guy there wont be time for anything interesting or original. I guess I'm just saying, you cant polish a turd.
