THE WALKING DEAD #63 Review

"The dead are still walking and this book is still awesome"

Dale’s gone missing and the crew sets out to look for him. Andrea’s freaking out (as usual) and Abraham just wants to get to safety. Eugene and Gabriel have a conversation about God and eventually everyone sets up camp in Gabriel’s old church where he reveals his history and how he came to meet them.

Oh yeah, and the first issue of the surprise smash hit Chew is reprinted as well! So you actually get two books for the price of one.

The Good

I really can’t stand Andrea anymore. She’s gone from mildly-annoying to “please just shut the #$%& UP!” Why is that listed in the good section? Because it shows how well crafted these characters are. It’s a credit to Kirkman’s ability to make these people well-rounded and three dimensional. The same goes for pretty much everyone in the book.

Gabriel’s confession was great and very appropriately took place in a church. The conversation between he and Eugene was really well done. Not just because it added a little insight to their characters, but because it’s just nice to see these people acting like normal people and having real conversations in the midst of all the carnage and craziness going on around them.

Also, while it wasn’t really part of the issue I’m reviewing, I have to mention the Chew reprint. It’s a great book and you should all read it – and it’s also super-cool that they gave it away for free here!

The Bad

I don’t know. It was a pretty good issue and I’m not sure I really had any problems with it. I think it’s kind of weird that this arc actually has a title (Fear the Hunters) because I don’t recall The Walking Dead ever really having “arcs” before. I guess there might’ve been a title for the arc leading up to issue 50. Anyway, it’s not really a bad thing so don’t worry about it.

The Bottom Line

Walking Dead hasn’t been this good in a while. I really like the addition of these new characters (Eugene, Abraham and that lady whose name I keep forgetting). The dynamic has shifted and with the passage of time we’re not just watching people deal with a totally messed-up zombie world, we’re starting to see the long-term effects of living in said world. Which I guess is sort of the same thing but… well anyway, it’s a good book and it was a good issue. Not mind-blowingly awesome, but a solid B.

I love this series, love some of the characters, love the feel of it and I loves me zombies...

BUT......in a way, I feel this series is just dragging along for one thing after another. When you think about it, this comic will go on and on and on on with people surviving, escaping zombies and sometimes surviving but living like bums in the night.

This series needs something new and fresh and soon.

Jedi...

Agree tottally with your first comment....

Couldn't disagree more with your second comment. Dragging on and on is pretty muchthe point of TWD. To show what hapopens beyond the 2 hr movie. or mini series. we get to see what a real mess the world is, and how it really just doesn't seem to get better. PLUS for "dragging on" the pace of this book is breakneck.

I can't read the revies here, because I only read it in Trades. I'd go bananas if I read it monthly, because I tear through a trade in about 7 min, it would take me 2 min to read the monthly comic. So I can only read the review that comes out after trades are released.

Anyway TWD is the mutherfucking holy grail of Comics, and Zombie storie BOTH!

Don't change a thing Kirkman, this is one of the only new and fresh books on the shelf.

I get that the goal of the comic is to go in details with people surviving a horrific situation. From then on, it's just a bit too slow and it's a good point that maybe this book should be read as a trade and not on a monthly basis.

I would suggest ''Crossed'' by Garth Ennis (this guy is the holy grail of writers). It's the perfect exemple of how characters in a very hard situation can move in crazy events yet you really feel and care for these characters.

Of course Kirkman is no Gath Ennis but, it's just that I feel TWD is getting a bit too slow.

Thanks for the recommendation Jedi, I'll check it out.

I gotta ask though do you not care about the characters in WD. I am super attached to them, and care what happens to them. I'm a Ennis fan, but I would go so far as to say, Kirkman is his equal.

I care about the characters in WD but, to a point where I know anyone could die, the characters I actually liked are mostly dead, only one is left (that black girl with the sword, forget her name), other then that, it's ok.

I guess the best exemple to what I'm trying to say is, it feels like Lost BEFORE we knew there was going to be 6 seasons in total. Before that, the show was good but was really going anywhere without fully knowing how things would tie up. We know WD will go on and on and on without really having a goal or an end therefore characters in this situation will live similar events and I fear the book will become repetitive.

To tay Kirkman is equal to Garth Ennis is a bit strange in my book but, everyone's entitled to their opinion. If you compare Ennis's book and how many great, super awsome books he's done compared to Kirkman, it's a bit of a David VS Goliath battle (Ennis being goliath obviously) and in this tale, the small dude doesn't win...in my book anyway.
