Wall Street Likes Comic Movies

By Jason Lethert     May 01, 2002

Tuesday, USAToday ran a story on the big Hollywood summer season, andobviously comic properties were the cornerstone of the coverage. WallStreet apparently approves of comic films.

2001 was notorious for being a weak yearfor the industry, especially the summer blockbusters. Not only are the"popcorn" films necessary cash cows, but they're usually Hollywood'sstrongest genre. But the studios seem to have gotten their groove back, asthe industry as a whole is up %15 from last year at this date.

And the bean counters are licking theirchops, because the best is yet to come. For a change, there is asurprising amount of positive buzz surrounding comic-to-film adaptations, andgenre films in general. Blade did huge business in the earlyspring, and that was the least of the year's offerings. And of course,Sony finally has the sequel to their most successful film in Men in Black II.

However, the "nexus of buzz" ifyou will has surrounded one of the most potent one-two punch in Hollywoodhistory. Within two weeks of each other, the two most anticipated films - Spider-Manand Star Wars - will do battle, and both are riding unprecedented tidesof positive buzz.

The article also mentioned the studioshave high hopes for some smaller films. The Road to Perdition washighlighted as having a good shot at success, considering the star power of TomHanks, Jude Law, and Paul Newman.
