Randall Wallace (writer-turned-director) will be directing the next fantasy adventure, THE ARCANUM, says the Hollywood Reporter. The director will be adapting the Thomas Wheeler novel of the same name to the big screen with Wheeler prepping the screenplay version of his work. Gold Circle's Scott Niemeyer and Norm Waitt will executive produce while Mandate Pictures handles international distribution.

Plot Concept: Adapted from Wheeler's debut novel, the 1919-set story follows Arthur Conan Doyle as he leads a secret society known as the Arcanum -- whose members include magician Harry Houdini, voodoo priestess Marie Laveau and horror writer H.P. Lovecraft -- against a powerful supernatural force that threatens the world.

Is it just me, or does this sound like The Watchmen? I mean, all of these sound great in concept, but I have to wait to see the final product to judge.

Uh... nope... nope.... doesn't sound like the watchmen at all....

Or it's a little like The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, but Arthur Conan Doyle, Houdini, and Lovecraft were all real people, not fictional characters. It shouldn't matter if the plot concept sounds familiar. If Randall Wallace is doing it, it'll probably be a good movie.

Alpine I think you're right there seems to be somewhat of a resemblance. It still sounds interesting enough. But like always we'll have to wait for a trailer to see what look and pace they're shooting for. Something like this could easily be turned into a slow, investigative, boring movie.

Alpine and Wiseguy this sounds just like LXG, but maybe if they take the time and do it right it will be good. I am not up for a slow boirng movie though. If it has good action and a good story and leaves out the cheese that LXG brought to the table it ought to be a decent flick.

If they follow the book, yes, there should be some good action.

Isn't Watchmen all real people and LXG fictional? I could be wrong as I have never read Watchmen

Sorry Whiskey you're wrong on this one, Watchmen is all fictional that has real world people as supporting characters. i.e. political figures, celebrities.
This does sound like a rippoff of LXG. I mean "Inspired BY" LXG. But is definately one or the other. When was this book written?, anyone know?

biffbolt • Oct 23, 2007, 02:57pm •
gauley: it was written in 2004-2005ish, iirc. So definitely "inspired by". I liked the concept, but the plot and execution of the book was kind of hum-drum, so the concept of a movie version doesn't get me all that excited.

Wasn't there a movie floating around with Tolkien and CS Lewis in it and they've discovered a fantasy realm from which they begin to write their stories later in life?
