WHO WANTS TO BE A SUPER HERO?: Finale

By: Stephen Lackey
Date: Saturday, September 08, 2007

Mistake number one was to make this season finale a two hour special. You know what can happen when you eat to much cheese don’t you? At any rate, that’s what we got, a two hour finale featuring Hyperstrike, Hygena, and The Diffuser. At the beginning of the episode, the final three were given a mission to take out a power source that Dr. Dark was using to energize Giant Stan Lee, who was crushing through the city Godzilla style. It looked really cheap but it was humorous and I guess that was the point. So, to take out the power supply, the team has to fight through three angry dogs. Desperate to prove herself and knowing she won’t be able to stand up against the dogs Hygena comes up with a plan to make herself bait for the dogs to allow Hyperstrike and Diffuser to destroy the power supply. Of course, they slip into those puffy suits to do the job and they complete the mission. Eventually, Stan awards the team with versions of their action figure. Diffuser even took his action figure to bed with him. At the end of the episode, instead of whittling the group down to two, there was all this false suspense, only to have Stan tell the group that none of them would be eliminated. If there was no intention to kick anyone off, they could have spent more time making the mission or giant Stan more fun. The cliffhanger ending to the first hour was quite funny to me though, an ECW wrestler named “Balls” shows up at the lair all menacing like.

The order of the missions for the final hour feels anticlimactic. It was probably decided to be done this way so that the previous hour would end with a cliffhanger. So, in the second hour, Balls informs the final three that he is at the lair to take them for a final bit of training at a stunt school. The green screen stuff is pretty funny, especially with the unbelievably stiff Diffuser. Then the stunt trainer trains them on how to pull off punches and fight scenes. As if his name wasn’t funny enough, Balls tells everyone that wrestling is real just before he leaves to allow the heroes to continue their training. After the training was complete and the heroes are preparing to leave, Dr. Dark drops from the ceiling ready for a fight. Now, the fight sequence actually wasn’t too bad, they all worked through their movements well and it was pretty fun. So the final shot is that they all use their special abilities to blast Dr. Dark through a door. Now, if the series would have ended here it wouldn’t have been too bad because at least it would have ended on a fight. We still wouldn’t know who Dr. Dark really is or what why he wanted to kill the heroes, or what happened to the Bee Chick but at least there was a fight. At any rate after the fight the heroes are sent to a press event with Kennedy, remember her from MTV all those years ago? Apparently the heroes have learned nothing from Diffuser’s giving up a weapon to a kid several episodes ago and Hyperstrike revealing his real last name to other kids because they all spill their guts in a makeup room getting ready for the press event. So, are all three of these heroes just stupid? Oh, and before it’s all over, Stan talks to each hero individually to try and get them to cry and he succeeds two out of three times.

In the final moments, I think the producers gave away who the winner would be before Stan even mentioned it. Isn’t it funny that when the three heroes were brought to Universal Studios that Hyperstrike and Hygena were given a few moments with their families but Diffuser was not? I thought for a minute that maybe Diffuser’s family couldn’t make it to the finale event but then the cameramen cut to them several times. When the Diffuser was finally announced as the winner his family was then brought on stage. This was a dead giveaway to me. I’ve never liked Diffuser from the beginning. I think he’s a pompous bully type who just tried not to be in order to keep from getting kicked off the series early. Plus, the guy can’t act and he looks absolutely terrible in the green screen sequences. In the end, I still find this series to be really cheesy but by focusing on the fact that it’s a reality show first and a comic book show second, I have been able to better accept contestants like Hygena from this year’s competition and Fat Momma, contestant from last year.

Yes it was sheesy. It's supposed to be cheesy. In general the series reminded me of the 60s Batman TV series (yes, I'm that frikkin' old, deal with it.) In general, I liked this season, though not as much as the first because no characters stood out for me the way Monkey Woman, Creature or Major Victory did last year. Hygena was a less annoying version of Fat Momma but I felt she, not Parthenon, should have been dumped.

They weren't going to dump the only remaining woman. One of the guys was going to go.

BTW, the film clips of the gargoyle creature The Defuser was fighting in his "movie" came from a Scifi original movie called Darklight which starred Richard Burghi, David Hewlett and John DeLancie.
