Who Wants to Watch a Wannabe Hero?

By: Stephen Lackey
Date: Sunday, July 22, 2007

This week sees the premiere of season two of the SCIFI Channel and Stan Lee’s Who Wants to be a Super Hero. I watched the first episode of the first season and never looked back. First, I thought it just came off ridiculous and in a way made a mockery of comic book fandom. Now, I’m not a cosplayer or anything but I do read a ton of comics and somehow this whole thing seemed wrong to me. So, after I left the series several of my friends told me how much fun the series was. Was it actually good? I’m planning to watch the premiere to review but I don’t expect to stay with it unless I’m surprised by it. I dunno, just seeing a woman running around with donuts hanging from her belt last season just seemed dumb to me. It wasn’t amusing enough to be a comedy and it wasn’t related to real comic books enough to be innovative. I’d love to see a documentary series where real artists struggle to get their heroes published but I realize a series like that would only appeal to a very niche audience. In the premiere episode, after the 10 new contestants arrive at Stan Lee’s secret lair, Stan is kidnapped by a dark figure setting up the first mission for the wannabe heroes. Will you be watching Thursday night?

This week I’ll of course be watching Eureka and for better or worse Who Wants to be a Super Hero and On the Lot. Other than that it’s all about The 4400 and John From Cincinnati on Sunday night. Wow, am I ready for the fall season to start!

HATE reality shows, all of them, too much BS filler for a few good moments and the moments are so few and far between. I am looking forward to fall too although Holly Hunter's Saving Grace might be interesting. Just saying. :-)

I consider Who wants to be a superhero? a guilty pleasure for me. I know it total cheese but I loved driving my wife nuts with last season.

definitely give "burn notice" a chance. the things that man can do with cell phones and duct tape. besides, it's got bruce campbell for chrissakes.

oh yeah. cincinnati is spelled wrong in "john from cincinatti."

Spelling is not the only thing wrong with "John From Cincinnatti"

Yeah, Who Wants To Be A Superhero was fun. It wasn't about power (none of the contestants really had any) but about strength of character. Would you throw away your chance to win to help a lost child? Are you honorable and supportive in your dealings with your fellow contestants? Are you truthful and honest? These are the qualities Stan Lee was looking for.

In a genre that glorifies back stabbing, lying and cheating, Who Wants To Be A Superhero was a breath of fresh air as any hint of dishonesty was grounds for elimination. The contestants were geeky but good hearted and funny in a mostly laugh with you, not at you way.

And who can forget Tyveculous in the awful new costume provided by Stan? He pretended to love it when he obviously hated it (and who wouldn't?) and almost got himself eliminated for lying.

One other thing about Friday's Doctor Who. It's got Daleks. You know it's good Daleks are involved.

BTW: Anyone else loving Martha Jones.

Yeah, Martha is cool.

It's funny when I saw the actress in Doomsday, I thought it's a shame she wasn't the wasn't going to be the next companion 'cause she's got a good vibe to her.

And behold: It is the same actress, playing a nwew character.

PS: I agree about Who Wants to Be a Superhero. Kindness being rewarded is definitely a refreshing change from most reality shows.

Also, Burn Notice is great fun. The cast really makes that series. Definitely worth a look.
