Even on the best of shows, there are weaker installments. This installment was still really entertaining, more so than most other shows currently running this summer, but it doesn’t hold up to what we’ve already seen from Warehouse 13 this season. Runway models are disappearing at special events all over the world. Artie believes these disappearances are artifact related so he puts Pete and Myka on the case. The story from here on is ridiculously predictable but still really funny. You’d probably expect Myka to end up having to go under cover as a model and you’d be right. It’s a good thing that Myka is strong in character because the other models and the director constantly hurl some extremely hilarious insults her way. The insults of course don’t make much sense when you look at Joanne Kelly, especially in the backless dress, but the writers are counting on suspension of disbelief to make the jokes work.
Unfortunately, the actual mystery feels a bit pedestrian compared to other recent episodes of the show and the action is really pulled back too. There are tricks producers do to maintain budgets and trimming back action and FX in one episode so another can have more of the bells and whistles is one such trick. In a humorous secondary story, Claudia decides to give in to the local guy she met last week and have coffee and chili with him. Artie’s initial attempt at giving Claudia advice about being a young woman is gut bustlingly funny and the actual date is slapstick gold. Warehouse 13 isn’t the show for another teen romance story (there’s enough of that out there already) so hopefully the writers will keep this new story element in check. While it was funny this time, the more interesting story sits with Pete and Myka.
Recently, Leena has been the target of dislike because she is just bland and her character has no weight on the show so far. She was nowhere to be found in this episode and the story benefited from her absence. If you’ve got nothing to say or do just step out of the way and let the train keep rolling. Her weakness on the show is due to poor writing more than anything having to do with the actress who seems to be perfectly fine at her craft. The fact is that with her out of the way the story just clicks along at a nice pace so even the afore mentioned flaws aren’t too big a deal because the show moves along quick. In fact when I was fast forwarding through the commercials for the episode, I looked at the green line cruising across the screen and realized that the episode was almost over before I had time to complain about much. The fact is there are tons of funny little moments in this episode and one slightly sappy but still effective moment between Pete and Myka that all makes this another entertaining watch even if the story is a little “meh”.
Next week is the big Eureka/Warehouse 13 crossover which will probably be much less epic than SyFy is making out, but it’s still sure to be fun. Pete, Myka, Artie, and Claudia are on a nice roll right now and if the creators can keep up the pace they’ll have created another season of one of the best science fiction shows on TV.
I agree that I didn't miss Leena one bit this episode. I think they should just forget about her storyline and move on.
I think this was a solid B episode, not the best Warehouse 13 episode, but still good.
Stephen, I don't the idea was to suspend disbelief the whole time Myka was being called fat. The point was supposed to be that compared to the other models she was fat. It was more a jab at the modeling industry than a jab at Myka. I gotta to admit, though, Joanne Kelly's not as skinny as I thought she was and that's not a bad thing. Sure, she is skinny, but thanks to the back-less dress we know she's not a walking skeleton. I really hate it when you can see someone's spine poking out of their back. That's one thing that turns me off immediately. That's just TOO skinny. Thankfully, Joanne is not.
Looking forward to the crossover next week. Though, this might hamper them casting other Eureka actors in guest starring roles as they did last year. It just might be too confusing if they continue to use them and not have them be their Eureka characters.
