Chris Ware's QUIMBY THE MOUSE is a masterpiece of page design and narrative complexity
© Chris Ware
, the hardcover collection culled from the pages of Chris Ware's ground-breaking ACME NOVELTY LIBRARY
and released by Pantheon, has already earned a place in comic literary history as one of the finest graphic novels ever published. Now, Ware presents his second book, a 56 page black and white hardcover album titled QUIMBY THE MOUSE
Aping the styles of advertising and animation iconography of the '20s and '30s, Ware intricately constructs another detailed world of architectural genius, demonstrating his mastery of page and panel design in presenting the tale of a cartoon mouse not unlike the legendary characters of a bygone age. Quimby has also appeared in past issues of ACME NOVELTY LIBRARY
, but here he takes center stage, enduring agony and despair as he bravely trods on through the labyrinthine landscape of Ware's imagination.
As with the rest of Ware's work, the new book features his trademark perfectionism, amazing graphic design sensibilities, and complex narratives. Ware also provides readers with some of his famous "cut-out-and-assemble" paper models, again pointing to his fascination with precise design and structure. QUIMBY THE MOUSE
is certain to be another landmark release from one of the greatest living comic creators.QUIMBY THE MOUSE
will be available in November 2001 in two formats. The hardcover edition will retail for $24.95, while the softcover version will retail for $14.95. Both are from Fantagraphics Books.
