In mid October production will begin on Warner Bros. Pictures' 300. The film is based on Frank Miller's graphic novel of the same name.

The true story centers on the 300 elite Spartan fighters who, led by King Leonidas, fought to the death against King Xerxes' massive Persian army during the battle of Thermopylae in 481-480 B.C.

Gerard Butler stars. DAWN OF THE DEAD's Zack Snyder will direct from a script he wrote with Kurt Johnstad.

The comic is good and all... but to tell you the truth, I grew tired of epic films. After Braveheart and LOTR, no one movie made me go WOW. Iīd been going to the theater looking for some real emotions, awesome battles and the whole enchilada, but Alexander, Kingdom of Heaven, King Arthur, Troy, and other boring movies made me yawn.
I read the comic and, though itīs well written, thereīs nothing really original or exciting to make me say "hey, Iīll give epic films one more chance". Thatīs it for now, Iīm putting my foot down, Marge.

The Battle of Thermopylae was one of the greatest battles in the history of mankind. My understanding is that it is still studied by military officers to this day. Thus, I think the story has tremendous potential to be a great movie. In the right hands, it really could be an "epic" film worthy of the name. But, Zack Snyder doesn't give me a lot of confidence. Neither does Gerard Butler. Of course, at least it's not Brad Pitt and Oliver Stone...

Troy and King Arthur were probably the better of the four movies mentioned. I was hoping that Kingdom of Heaven would of had that epic feel, but Orlando Bloom, to me, isn`t charismatic enough to demand that sort of feeling. When you think about every one of the great epic movies had a great commanding leading man. Crowe with Gladiator, Gibson in Braveheart, and even OToole in Lawrence of Arabia.
I did like the battle scenes in KOH, Troy, and King Arhtur though.
I just hope that they take do the graphic novel, justice.

WAIT!... just wait, repeat that please? Zack Snyder is co-writing a cinematic adaptation of Frank Miller's novel? AND he's already signed Gerald Butler for the lead? Heck yeah! I'll be there on Day One, First Showing.

To me an "Epic" movie refers to its scope. The grand scope of its locations, events spanning long periods of time, depth of story and motivations, size of cast.

I'm not sure that King Arthur qualifies any more than First Night or Dragonheart does. Swords, battles and heroes alone don't make an epic.

Well, it certainly sounds like it has the potential to be a good film. As far as epics go, I know how you feel. The last epic that was remotely any good, I think, was Troy. I didn't care for King Arthur or Alexander, and I didn't even wanna touch KoH. However, all it takes is a good team. If the people are right for the job, then hopefully we can have a good movie on our hands.

I agree with Gtmac. In addition, pacing is important too. You will lose me if the story is too slow and/or I don't care about the characters. Battle sequences can become hard to follow and uninteresting when not handled with care. If what Arkhael said is true, this should be of particular concern. Films like this are often a huge task. I don't envy Zack Snyder.

Just because it's studied by military officers in their training doesn't mean it's necessarily a good source for entertainment. Military officers study historic battles to do post mortems of the tactics and scenarios, looking at the decisions of commanders under the light of hindsight, and with expanded knowledge those officers didn't have and discuss how they might have handled it given the same resources. FYI, military officers in some armed services arms also study engineering, calculus and physics, but that doesn't mean I want to see a movie on those subjects either.
