In a move which could net Warner Bros. Pictures some potential future video game movies, Variety reports the studio picked up most of Midway Games' assets in bankruptcy court for the fire-sale price of $33 million, giving the studio rights to Mortal Kombat, Spy Hunter, Joust and several other game franchises. The latest deal comes on top of Warner Bros. taking over the rights to the Lord of the Rings game rights earlier this year.

A Delaware bankruptcy court judge OK'd the deal last week, saying that the objections to the transaction had been resolved. Midway filed for bankruptcy protection earlier this year. Sumner Redstone had sold his 87% stake to Mark E. Thomas last year for only $100,000 along with the assumption of $70 million of Midway debt.

Midway's creditors agreed last month to give Thomas a $5 million payment. Warner declined to comment on its plans for Midway. And it opted not to buy two Midway development studios in San Diego and Newcastle, England.

Warner Bros. has been bolstering its vidgame and interactive biz. It bought Snowblind Studios in February, "Lego" games producer TT Games in 2007 and Monolith Prods. in 2006. The studio also owns a 30% stake in Eidos, which produces the Tomb Raider franchise.

Mortal Kombat, Spy Hunter, Joust, etc. that's wishful thinking. What you'll probably get is Ms. Pacman the Movie starring Rosie O'Donnell!

Duggernaut 7/6/2009 5:47:36 AM

I could see John Goodman as Pacman and Zac Efron as Pacman Jr.  We will have a couple songs on the soundtrack by the Jonas brothers and throw in Seth Rogen and his side kicks as the ghosts. Done and done. Now give me the ten million bucks for ths script which I will write in the next five minutes on a napkin.

I don't think they are talking about making movies from the games but making video games out of the movies that they make.  They bought the video game company not just the movie rights to its properties.

Wiseguy 7/6/2009 6:18:16 AM

Sounds like a pretty smart move by WB, especially the way the rights to these games have been selling lately.

MrJawbreakingEquilibrium 7/6/2009 6:57:31 AM

Wait, now I'm confused.   Because of another article.  So, did they buy the rights or the whole company?

MrJawbreakingEquilibrium 7/6/2009 6:58:43 AM

Never mind, I'm retard.  I missed a whole batch of sentences.  Damnit.  I think it's all the retarded comments on the internet that's slowly making me become like them.

JOUST! Ha we said that just a couple days ago.  LOL.

So what the WB will come up with crappy plans to make movies from the games like they do from the DC comics? I still think Marvel is doing it right.

Inferno 7/6/2009 5:44:31 PM

I expected Midway to go bankrupt as they announced not too long after the production of MK vs DC but I didn't expect WB to buy the company.

Lord of the rings Online??? I thought they only participated in the distribution of the expantion pack?

Oh, well. stil good for them, if they know how to use these assets.

Inferno 7/6/2009 5:45:58 PM

No, they won't make crappy movies like their DC comics division. They'll make unsuccesful remakes like The Hulk and The Punisher.
