Warner Bros. Animation to release new "Superman" Animated film

By: Karl Schneider
Date: Sunday, March 04, 2007

According to a Warner Home Video press release, an all new original movie, Superman Doomsday, will be released on DVD September 18, 2007.

Produced by Bruce Timm (Justice League Unlimited, Batman: The Animated Series) and written by Duane Capizzi (The Batman, The Batman vs. Dracula), Superman Doomsday is inspired by the best-selling graphic novel of all time, DC Comics’ The Death of Superman. When the intergalactic serial killer Doomsday is unearthed, Superman meets the creature head on in the battle to end all battles. Going punch for punch, Superman finally ends the threat of Doomsday as he throws one last punch and collapses forever – making the ultimate sacrifice to save Metropolis and all those he once loved.

Superman Doomsday will be available exclusively on DVD with collectable packaging as well as over 70 minutes of incredible DVD extras.

KJ's Take:  I'm a sucker for animated superhero films, I like to watch them when my insomnia takes over.  I'll probably check this out.

Oh, did I mention that Superman Returns was an awesome movie?

probably check it out?

dude, its bruce timm, the man responsible for the best batman and superman animated series, this one is a must

and are you kidding about superman returns?
i mean i loved the movie, but felt let down by the way the character was handle most of the time, here is hoping the man of steel is much much better

scoxocs • Mar 04, 2007, 01:31am •
Yeah, darth, what's KJ smoking? Any Supes or Batman done by Timm or Dini and I'm there.

Superman Returns was awful.

well i didnt think the movie was aweful, just a let me down, problem with the movie is that they try to deal with supes as a human being, which in a way, thats what the character really struggles with, but he has superpowers, so dont undermine them, come on, give us the superman that the comic book writers write about, the powerful godlike figure that is here to protect humanity and fight off greater threats... we get it, he loves lois and lois loves him back, but thats not what the fans wants to focus that much on

Yeah, I hated "Superman Returns". And darthcaifan, I don't think the problem was dealing with Kal-El as a human being...I think the problem was that it was a sequal to an outdated franchise. I watch the old Superman movies when I'm feeling nostalgic. When "Superman Returns" came out, it had been 19 years since "Superman IV" had been in theaters. Seeing as how "Returns" was only supposed to be a sequal to "Superman" and "Superman II", that means that it had been even longer since source material had been in theaters. Also, I was very disappointed with Kevin Spacey's performace as Lex Luthor. It's like he just showed up and said his lines, walking through the part. Kal-El's struggle with his own humanity was the LEAST of the movie's problems.

I’ll tell you what the basic problem is with making big budget Superman movies. The Superman universe is complex and multi-dimensional both figuratively and literally. But a movie has to make a lot of money, which means the producer thinks he has to dumb it down to get a large audience. So we get a retreads of the basic Superman story told over and over in slightly different forms. Personally I think they underestimate their audience. It’s the 21st century for God’s sake. We have space travel and we are looking for alien life. Scientist today suspect there really are extra dimensions to hide evil villains in. They even call the suspected matter in these dimensions “dark matter.” If that’s not a setup for a Superman movie I don’t know what is. Hollywood producers let your freak flag fly. We’re ready for more than just Superman falls in love and meets evil genius. Stupefy us with mind-bending concepts and bring it home with the fate of humanity at stake!

Pure and simple; Superman is awesome! And, I'm sure the Superman/Doomsday animated movie will be a lot better than Brainiac Attacks (that WAS aweful!)...Hmmm? I wonder if there will be a follow-up with "The Reign of Supermen" animated movie?

I'll give it a go, too.

For the record, I'm with KJ here. Superman Returns was awesome. It felt like a continuation of the Donner legacy, which I love, and showed Superman as, well, a super-HERO and not a super-powered cop or a super-powered vigilante or a super-powered mercenary.
That HERO part? When I was in the theater, and Superman caught the plane and landed in the stadium? The theater broke out in applause. I got misty and thought "only in fantasy are people this good and right."
Some plot points of the film weren't the best, I'll admit, but after the train-wreck that was X3, Superman Returns was a GREAT cleansing of the palate.
X3 should have been subtitled "No Plot, But Marketing LOVES Wolverine"

Not trying to be negative, KJ, but this info came out a long time ago, when they annouced Iron Man, they said that WB is making their movies as well, and Superman Doomsday would come out in sept of 07. Now, I am fairly sure this was the site that talked about. Anywho, Glad to re-hear this. I agree with most on here that SR was really bad. In no way was it a great movie, and KJ, nice little comment to get the masses flowing, doesn't it feel good to instigate? There is not one thing in SR that makes sense nor is entertaining. Name one great thing that stood out in SR? Lex was bad, Kate bosworth was bad, the boy was bad, THE SUIT, and the direction....the only thing that was remotley good was Brandon Routh....and I have ot admit that he surprised me....because I thought he was a terrible choice...(in the DVD extras one of the writers ere livid that routh was chosen....watch it is quite funny.)

Oh and if you want a great continuation of the DOnner legacy, Merin, check out Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut. The only superman movie that was really good in 06. What was wrong with X3? It did better than SR for goodness sakes something was done right. People in the theater broke out in applause?Yeah, plause is true as in implausable, no way that happened. You became MISTY eyed? FCOL! Refer to the above paragraph and let me know what was so good about SR....and make it valid points, man. No more fake mushy crap.

This animated movie sounds great....not to disappoint...but it has been reformated and will be different fromt he comic....but still think this will be great.

I have enjoyed all of the Batman/Superman animated series and films. They are very well done. I especially loved Return of the Joker. I have both versions, and if this Superman Doomsday is anything like the more graphic DVD version of Return of the Joker, this will be awesome.

Awesome, can't wait to check this out. There've been some awesome direct to DVD animations as of late (Iron Man, Hellboy), hopefully the trend will continue.
