Warner Bros. making CONAN THE BARBARIAN

By: Karl Schneider
Date: Thursday, June 15, 2006
Source: Variety

Warner Bros. Pictures is eyeing an early 2007 start of production for CONAN THE BARBARIAN, a new take on the Robert E. Howard created character.

Boaz Yakin (FRESH, REMEMBER THE TITANS) has been asked to write and possibly direct the film after his pitch impressed the studio.

Yakin's concept is reported to be more faithful to Howard's story than were the two previous Conan films which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as Conan.

More faithful or not, I hope its more gritty and less comical. I've never seen a comic or book on this, but loved the first movie, though its aged a little now.

The second was just to silly and hokey.

Bring on Conan. And no Diesel, please.

If no Diesel, then Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson?

How many decent muscle-bound actors are out there? And by "decent," I mean using AHnold as a benchmark (both appearance and mannerism).

I'd like an unknown that can act well and look really pissed off. I agree with more gritty and less comical.

My first exposure to Conan was a creepy image of him standing over a dead body and suddenly swarms of insects started swarming out of the corpse. Deeply disturbing imagery for a then 7 year old boy.

I gotta take issue here. The first movie was extremely faithful to the books, most of the content was lifted liberally from the first couple of Conan books pretty much intact.

Conan the Destroyer on the other hand, the less said the better. Comical yes, enjoyable yes, but not faithful to the original character. "Cousin's sister's brother" indeed...

But yeah make it dark, gritty. As for actors, the Rock is a poor choice ethnically (Michael Clarke Duncan as the Kingpin anyone?). Better to go with maybe Triple H or John Cena, both of whom can look mighty pissed off and have the appropriate build, plus they can act.

Please no muscle bound meatheads who have absolutely no acting ability.. Wrestlers can't act.. the Rock is the only one that comes close and he still is a B-rate actor.. They need a top notch actor to make it a sucess. And since there are really no actors jacked enough to play Conan.. someones going to have to see Barry Bonds for the hook up.. if you know what I mean..

I'd still be interested in Arnie in a Conan the King film if it were done in the style of the first in the series. That said, this franchise could use a reboot, preferably with an unknown in the lead role (and please God no Wilt the Stilt style guest stars).

Another remake... wtf...

The original was fantastic (yes, the sequel was goofy) and does NOT need an update...

Lame, very very lame...
