Warner Bros Wants SWEENEY TODD PG-13?

As strange as it seems, this first appeared in yesterday's edition of the Sunday Mail and has since made its way online to various outlets. Warner Bros wants to "tone down" Tim Burton's adaptation, SWEENEY TODD, to a PG-13 Rating. The film --starring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham-Carter, Alan Rickman, Timothy Spall-- is a big screen adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s award-winning musical thriller Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Apparently, Warner Bros wants to turn the grisley, gore, violence of the story into a "family oriented" movie? Whatever the strange reasoning behind the decision, that's what is being reported.

Here's what the Sunday Mail had to say on it:

During filming at Pinewood studios, prosthetic lookalike limbs were used (obviously the real thing would have been taking realism too far!) and they were so gruesomely lifelike that some of the crew became nauseous and had to take fresh air breaks...those on set were further spooked because there were piles and piles of sliced-up 'corpses', plus several spare 'necks' in case Burton wanted to shoot several takes of the same throat-cutting scene.

Tim Burton's SWEENEY TODD hits a limited theater release on December 21, 2007.

Thanks to Maniac scooper, Snallygaster, for passing this bit along..

Wait. Family oriented movie, about Sweeney Todd? Are you kidding? What about a family oriented movie about The Texas Chainsaw Massacre?

I sincerely hope they do not screw up one of the best musical of all time due to demographics.

AlpineWoods • Aug 27, 2007, 06:49pm •
But they could very well do that, just to get teens and young people to see the movie. If it's rated R, I'll definitely go to see it. If not, then I'll skip it.

If this is true, it is the worst possible thing Warner Bros. could do. Families are not going to go see a musical based on this subject matter. The under 18 teen demo that all these forgettable PG 13 horror films are aimed at are not going to see a musical period. Even teenage girls obsessed with Johny Depp won't be able to handle this. If they water Sweeney Todd down and alienate the adult audience that might be interested in witty R rated fare or those who are familiar with Sondheim then they are guaranteeing a bomb.

i agree Kerrith that they're making a big mistake, but this is Tim Burton in a dark, macabre film. An intelligent marketing team will be able to sell the hell out of this.

They're not making it for families, but they are trying to capture the teen audience. CREAM
