Warner Bros. Pictures has picked up the feature film rights to the SHANNARA fantasy book series by Terry Brooks.

The series is set in a world decimated by apocalyptic battles, with mankind splitting into races of trolls, gnomes, dwarves and men, with elves coming out of hiding. Politics and war are waged using magic with a backdrop of the skeletal remains of skyscrapers and subways.

There are more than a dozen books in the series which started with THE SWORD OF SHANNARA back in 1977.

Dan Farah will exec produce. Ryan Colucci will co-produce.

Loved this series of novels...especially the second set starting with the Scions of Shannara...can't wait to see what they do with it...I just hope they don't screw it up.

I love the series too. It was the very first adult fantasy series I read when I was in 6th grade or something.

But this could go either way really fast. It could be a Lord of the Rings or it could very well be an Eragon.

So now Warner Bros Studios owns the movie rights to the Harry Potter and the Elfstones of Shannara series..

JK Rowling is the top selling living fantasy author in the world..

Guess who's the second top selling living fantasy author in the world...?

Terry Brooks.

Now, Warner Bros owns the rights to the top two living fantasy authors..

By damn, Warner's stock just went way up over the next few years.

Jarrod S.

I've only read the first book, Sword of Shannara. It's practically a plot point by plot point rip-off of LOTR.

Hmmm, the first book was big (and very similar to Lord of the Rings). Will they make it two movies or one? Or maybe they'll start with First King?

I'm not familiar with the series, can anyone bring me up to speed? What is the deal here, is it set in the future? And even better, is it worth me hunting for it at chapters?

madmanic999...I highly suggest you go out and get these books...Terry Brooks was influenced by Tolkien in a huge way and you can see that in the very first book unfortunately it turned allot of people off, for me I thought it was masterful but that's just me...I also believe every book after that just gets better and better and his story telling is one of the best around but then again, that's just me...lol...I also have to agree with Spanners the Scions of Shannara series was just all out awsome...

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who thought the first book was lacking (**cough cough SUCKED!). Whereas there was nothing I wanted to see left out of the LOTR adaptation to film, I seem to remember this full of filler. While, I struggled to get through this tome I can't say I'm surprised they picked it up for adaptation. At this point I'm waiting for the Fantasy and Comic book phase to pass and some great new Scifi to come out....and Thunder Cats does not count.

Between the possibility of this, a Thundercats films and the possible return of Jericho I almost passed out.

Hopefully they are actually made and done with the same respect and love that Lotr got. This could be a major franchise over the years for WB, especially when the final Potter movie is released and done.

Not that I don't expect them to gobble up rights to whatever else J.K. does in the future.

This is a shame. I have never understood the allure of these books. They are TRASH. They are blatant rip offs of LOTR, not a retooling, or a flattering mimic, they are a blatant rip off. There is a world of great fantasy out there, and they pick this. To compare this to or put it in the same class as the HArry Potter books is a joke. Those books are filled with originality and wonderful themes.

I agree wholeheartedly with teabagging2000 there is so much I would want to see left out of these, like everything. I would like to see them fast track Talisman, or pick up The Thomas Covenant series, now that would make a great franchise, although, probably close to impossible to do. Or how about the Faded Sun Trilogy, or the Endymion series, all of these are head and sholders above this crap.
