A week after it was reported that Kristen Stewart, Helena Bonham Carter and Gary Oldman were offered roles in Warner Bros. Pictures' upcoming live-action take of Akira, Twitch reports that Gary Oldman has opted to pass on the project while his Batman Begins co-star Ken Watanabe may be the one who takes on the character of the Colonel.
There's still no word yet on whether Stewart and Carter would boarding the production as they weigh their options. At the moment, the only confirmed casting in the production seems to be Garrett Hedlund in the role of Kaneda. Helmer Jaume Collet-Serra (Unknown) will direct from a screenplay by Harry Potter writer Steve Kloves.
Plot Concept: "Akira" is based on anime artist Katsuhiro Otomo's six-volume graphic novel masterwork. The film is said to take place in "New Manhattan," a metropolis that was rebuilt after being destroyed 31 years ago. The famous motorcycle will also definitely be a part of the film.
