A week after it was reported that Kristen Stewart, Helena Bonham Carter and Gary Oldman were offered roles in Warner Bros. Pictures' upcoming live-action take of Akira, Twitch reports that Gary Oldman has opted to pass on the project while his Batman Begins co-star Ken Watanabe may be the one who takes on the character of the Colonel.

There's still no word yet on whether Stewart and Carter would boarding the production as they weigh their options. At the moment, the only confirmed casting in the production seems to be Garrett Hedlund in the role of Kaneda. Helmer Jaume Collet-Serra (Unknown) will direct from a screenplay by Harry Potter writer Steve Kloves.

Plot Concept: "Akira" is based on anime artist Katsuhiro Otomo's six-volume graphic novel masterwork. The film is said to take place in "New Manhattan," a metropolis that was rebuilt after being destroyed 31 years ago. The famous motorcycle will also definitely be a part of the film.

I wonder why Gary Oldman pulled out?

mike10 11/23/2011 9:39:00 AM

I don't know why Gary Oldman pulled out but it's nice to see some asian actors in this movie unless they are trying to completely americanize the movie.

monkeyfoot 11/23/2011 9:55:03 AM

Wow, they even picked an actor who looks exactly like the character!

monkeyfoot 11/23/2011 9:56:59 AM

Crazy & Mike, you don't know how hard I had to fight the Beavis & Butthead in me to not say anything about Gary Oldman pulling out!

This is a train wreck happening in slow motion. Any real Akira fan cannot say this will turn out well. It is going to be PG-13 and that will suck monket choad. The anime is obviously rated R. But the dille hole executives in Hollywood see Akira as a "cartoon" rather than what it is, a mature rated Japanese movie for adults NOT kids.
