Watch Out "Watchmen"

By: News Editor
Date: Friday, April 01, 2005
Source: Variety

There are rumors going around that Paramount's new head Brad Grey might possibly pull the plug on the live action version of THE WATCHMEN and put it in turnaround.

Both producer Larry Gordon and Paramount's Nancy Kirkpatrick have denied this. Kirkpatrick told Variety that "We really want to make it. We think it's a great piece of material."

For those of you not in the know the story is set in the 1950s, and centers on a seemingly ordinary man putting on superhero garb to track down criminals and is joined by those similarly inclined.

I hope that's an April Fool joke...I am in the know, and that's *not* the plot of The Watchmen. The story is set in the present day (including flashbacks to the 50s and 60s) and involves the estranged members of a group of crimefighters, their successors and former associates. They band together to investigate the murder of one of their own, only to gain an unpleasant perspective on what they are, how they are seen by the outside world, and what it means to do what they do.

Good one, Balkaster! April Fools, indeed! You nearly got me, too!

Folks, everyone knows that the Watchmen is actually about a jewelry repairman in the 50's who - along with a band of dedicated buddies, decides to go into business repairing watches in Ypsilante, Michigan. As everyone knows, the Ypsilante Red Mobsters have long had a stranglehold on all watch repair business in that erstwhile city. What emerges is a tale of triumph and tragedy, strength and love, and one group of men's determination to be Ypsilante's very own --
WATCHMEN.

Oy...at this point reguardless if you know the story of Watchmen or not you should know that it would get butchered as a feature film. For one the ending alone would definately be changed, because no one can stand for the "heros" to "lose". Also, Watchmen is so violent and that's what makes it great...so of course they'd cut out all the violence and tone it down a PG-13 film. Trust me everyone who loves Watchmen don't push for a movie you'll be sorely disappointed.

Not to mention, Paramount is the WORST, most IRRESPONSIBLE, MONEY-GRUBBING production company out there. They own MTV, which generates all the income they need, so movies are just gravy to them that they treat with shallow disrespect at best, and with complete apathy at worst.
Get ready for a complete f$#%-up of a movie.

They'd probably also make Dr Manhattan wear pants, the bastards.

This is a film project that has me both excited and terrified. In the right hands, it could be a great study in the mentallity of the superhero persona, and why someone would choose to spend thier nights gaudily dressed beating the snot out of people they deem as "bad"

Of course, in the wrong hands it could just become an extended ad for action figures that you just know are going to wind up in the three for a dollar bin at the local toys r us. An I really don't want to see the original work marred by a crappy piece of film-making.

Wait and see.

Okay look at what they did to League of Extraordinary Gentlemen...now magnify that by ten because that's how much better Watchmen was to LoEG. Now, imagine a movie ten times as bad as LoEG...that is just a taste my friends of what they will do this movie.

Also, by the by if they ever made this movie right I'd still want Dr Manhattan to have pants on.

They OUGHT to give it to HBO and let them make a miniseries out of it. Or perhaps Peter Jackson. Watchmen is a far cry from Lord of the Rings, but Jackson seems to understand how to make a good movie with a TON of source material, and still somehow manage to fit it within a timeframe that movie-goers can tolerate.

Plus, we know Jackson's Special Edition DVDs of the Watchmen would absolutely rock. :)
