WATCHMEN Lawsuit Approved for Fox

By: Jarrod Sarafin

Twentieth Century Fox said on Monday it will seek an injunction to block release of the Warner Bros movie Watchmen after a Los Angeles court ruled a copyright lawsuit against Warner can go forward, reports the AP. The movie about raffish, flawed superheroes -- which has already been shot -- is slated for release on March 6, said Warner Bros spokesman Scott Roe.

The highly anticipated film, with a budget believed to be about $120 million, is based on a 1980s DC Comics graphic novel written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons. In his decision released last week, Judge Gary Feess of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California wrote that Fox could hold some of the rights to the material, even if it did not hold all rights.

Fox argues it acquired motion picture rights to the "Watchmen" graphic novel in the last 1980s, and that even though it relinquished certain rights to the material in 1991 it held onto the right to distribute the first movie.

"We will be asking the court to enforce Fox's copyright interests in "The Watchmen" and enjoin the release of the Warner Brothers film and any related 'Watchmen' media that violate our copyright interests in that property," said Fox spokesman Gregg Brilliant.

The film is based on edgy material and takes an unorthodox approach to the superhero movie by focusing on flawed antiheroes. Scott Rowe, a spokesman for Warner Bros, said the ruling only means that the case will go forward.

BULLSHIT! This better not delay this movie because it was going to be a birthday gift for me considering my b-day is around that time...

If its true, I guess Fox has the right, but man are they being turds about this. Watchmen has been in Development Hell for freakin years! They didn't have the balls to make this flick because they probably thought it would be overkill since they had the X-men. Warner Bros and Snyder look like they have done a fantastic job and now Fox wants to capitalize on it. What a bunch of pricks!

Give Fox credit for being smart. Apparently they let the license to make the film and held on to the rights to distribute. Obviously making the film is where the big gamble is while the distribution deal is practically risk free, unless the movie totally bombs.

If Fox wins the suit I don't think WB has anything to worry about. It's just like Marvel, they make the films and distribute through other companies. The problem may be if there are any other copyright violations, that would make it more complicated.

Alright maniacs...After marriage and moving I haven't had internet fr almost a month. But, I'm back. You guys didn't even notice did you???

This is fucking bullshit. Not only does it have a chance of delaying a movie that made me jizz myself the first time I saw the preview but it also has a greater chance of material being taken out. The thing I'm most curious abut is what they own the rights to. Is it certain characters, storylines etc. etc.

But if the lawsuit has been approved that has t mean something. Expect a delay.

FUCK YOU FOX!!! YOU'VE HAD THE RIGHTS TO IT SINCE THE LATE 80'S AND YOU NEVER DID ANYTHING!!! They are just pissed another studio went above and beyond anything they had in mind for Watchmen.

"it held onto the right to distribute the first movie. "

So? All warner needs to do is slap a big ol' "2" or "Son of" on there, and it's clearly not the first movie.

God Bless the USA where we have become the most litigious society on the planet thanks to all the fucking Lawyers. I remember reading that here in NJ, there is One Lawyer for every Five people. That is out of control. If no one has been, check out TheStellaAwards.com. If that site doesn't piss you off, nothing will. Anyway, They will come to some agreement because WB knows the movie will make money. They will give Fox foreign box office rights or something. Man, it's a fucking movie, just give the poeople what they want and shut the fuck up.......

PS....I was just crusing the IMDB, and noticed that Brenden Fraser was playing Gung-Ho in G.I. Joe, is that true? I don't remember hearing about that.

You cats would be doing the samething FOX is doing. Anyway, I hope the movie releases on time.

Needaname - Welcome back and congrats on your marriage again. A word of advice that Chris Rock gave me once that may help you:
"When you wake up in the morning, you should look yourself in the mirror and say, "Fuck you. Fuck your hopes, fuck your dreams, fuck your plans … fuck everything you thought this life was going to bring to you. Now let's go out there and try to make this bitch happy."

This is all coming down to money. Either Warner will have to pay Fox off or they will have to work a deal for them to handle distribution either foreign or domestic. Warner may retain the DVD rights. Hopefully they can finish it all and keep the opening date.

Hanso, that Chris Rock line is funny. And often true.

hanso, lol. Between you and joey I'm guaranteed at least one good laugh a day.

needaname, of course I noticed. Just the other day I was wondering if you were still on your honeymoon or if you were the victim of some foul play for the insurance money. Glad it wasn't the latter.

LOL hanso & Chris Rock! Congrats again needaname04 & welcome back.

This is just ridiculous! I remember this being reported as coming down a little ways back. Utter bullshit. I don’t care what legal rights Fox has in the situation. They didn’t do shit with this property but now they want some of the pie and they’ll use a team of lawyers to make sure they get it or we don’t get a movie. Regardless of the legalities it’s a dirty move whose soul motivation (that’s right – soul) is easy money and fuck the fans. I hate the business end. Here’s hoping the Fox suits behind this choke on the hush-now money they get.
