WATCHMEN shuffles directors

Ain't It Cool News is reporting that Darren Aronofsky has replaced David Hayter as the attached director to the WATCHMEN movie. AICN's source was Hayter himself who had this to say about the development:

"It is definitely disappointing not to be able to direct the film, but we got into our second studio deal and it became increasingly clear that I was going to continue to have trouble getting the film made the way those of us who are fans know it must be made, until I gained more weight as a director."

Even if a greenlight is ever given to this stuck-in-development-hell superhero project, Aronofsky won't be giving directions to actors playing Dr. Manhattan and Silk Spectre anytime in the near future. The PI director's aborted science fiction drama THE FOUNTAIN has had a second breath of life blown into it due to the interest of X-MEN's Hugh Jackman. Two years ago everything was ready to go for the start of filming for THE FOUNTAIN until then-leading man Brad Pitt walked away from Aronofsky's film, leaving it without a leading man and giving cold feet to Warner Bros., the studio backing the $70 million dollar production.
