WATCHMEN'S Freighter Storyline Hits DVD Early

Contrary to previous reports, it seems that there will be a special Watchmen DVD release hitting shelves around the same time that the movie hits theaters next March. Snyder reported that the "Tales of the Black Freighter" storyline wouldn't be making the theatrical version of the film but that would be included in the DVD release. The New York Times is now reporting that it will actually be released into the market 4-5 days after the film hits theaters along with some other specials like a dozen 20+ minute Webisodes related to the storyline, a panel-by-panel slide show and more.

Check out the full report here.

The upcoming adaptation of the Alan Moore comic stars Patrick Wilson, Jackie Earle Haley, Matthew Goode, Billy Crudup, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Malin Akerman, Carla Gugino, Stephen McHattie and Matt Frewer. Snyder is leading the project, based on a screenplay by David Hayter and Alex Tse.

Plot Summary: A complex, multi-layered mystery adventure, "Watchmen" is set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the "Doomsday Clock" - which charts the USA's tension with the Soviet Union - is permanently set at five minutes to midnight. When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the washed-up but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion - a ragtag group of retired superheroes, only one of whom has true powers - Rorschach glimpses a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future. Their mission is to watch over humanity...but who is watching the watchmen?

Watchmen will hit theaters March 6, 2009.

i'm all for this, as long as its not anime inspired as we've heard. truthfully i'm also hoping the film is recolored digitally to make it look like the comic like i don't know "sin city and 300".

Just another way to make more money. Instead of including it with the DVD feature film as was first reported they can get you to spend an extra 20 bucks.

I think I'll wait for the Deluxe, editor's, un-rated, with never before seeing footage(all 2 minutes of it)editon dvd which will hopefully have Black Freighter included.

I'm sure tons of people will run out and buy it, then buy the DVD of the movie when it comes out, then buy the Deluxe Special Edition DVD when it comes out, all ensuring that the studios will keep doing this and keep screwing people out of their money. Me, I'll wait until it all comes out on 1 DVD and buy that.

I hardly ever by the special edition version of the movie unless its on sale around holiday time. (Example: I got the mummy box set - all three movies, for $10 two years ago at chrismas time.) So I won't shell out the dough to get this. Plus I found the comic within the comic aspect kind of annoying when I read the graphic novel

Whatever. I don't own a car or pay insurance or pay for gas just so I can blow money on DVDs and video games, so I'll probably pick this up as long as it's on the cheap side. I waited for the Sin City collectors set because it was announced before the regular edition was even out, and I'll probably do the same with Watchmen, but if I buy this mini-episode when it comes out I can always trade it in at blockbuster when the all-in-one version comes out.

At this point I'm clinging to physical media in any way I can. I don't do downloads. 'Never have, and won't until I have no other choice. Blu Ray is too damned expensive and the packaging is uninspiring and boring, so if this comes in a fancy box with some extra features I'll be happy as long as it's priced around ten bucks. Throw in a "Comedian" action figure and it's a done deal.

I don't mind uber-collector's editions as long as they're announced before you buy the regular version. They did that with Sin City and Lord of the Rings. That way you knew a fancier version was on the way, and you could make the call to either pick up the lesser version to hold you over, or wait for the better one later on. Some of the collectors sets can be snapped up for next to nothing a few years later like the Mummy Trilogy or the Back to The Future set which I paid 15 bucks apiece for, but some of them disappear rather quickly like the transforming Optimus Prime edition of Transformers which I cannot find anywhere now. Sometimes it pays to wait, sometimes it doesn't. I'm not buyin' Star Wars or Indiana Jones again until you can get each series in it's own complete set. Anybody who buys the newest Indy release on DVD is a sucka'. You're just going to have to buy it again next year when Crystal Skull is released on DVD.
