Waters Pens EARTHLINGS For Sci-Fi

A new series based around aliens is coming to the Sci-Fi Channel, says the Hollywood Reporter. Screenwriter Daniel Waters is in charge of penning a 90 minute pilot for a series called EARTHLINGS based around aliens living on our planet trying to save us from ourselves. The trade is saying this will be like 30 Rock From the Sun and the older Mork & Mindy concepts but more dark and subversive. Waters is also writing another feature film based around Lindsay Moran's memoir of being a spy though the story behind that is not very genre specific.

Plot Concept: "Earthlings," described as a darker and subversive successor to such shows as "Mork & Mindy" or "3rd Rock From the Sun," follows three aliens on Earth who try to save the planet but are continually vexed by humankind's irrational behavior, which seems to find ways to defeat their good intentions.

Sounds like something, but I like the good old fashioned alien invaders who come to kill us all, take over the world, or move on to the next planet. But that was the short lived "War of the Worlds" series.

"The trade is saying this will be like 30 Rock From the Sun and the older Mork & Mindy concepts but more dark and subversive."

So it's pretty much nothing like those shows as those shows were comedies and this one is supposed to be dark.

Could be interesting. But two cliches of the genre when dealing with aliens have either the aliens seeing humans as idiotic, violent and irrational creatures that are hard to understand by the super sophisticated ETs, or we are such noble and nearly angelic beings of such great potential they are almost in awe of us.They usually think we need a few thousand years to reach maturity.
These views are very overused, especially in genre TV and movies. Hopefully, they'll dance around them.

umm isnt that suppose to be *3rd rock from the sun*?

i've forgotten all about that FANTASTIC *War of the Worlds* series!! (sarcasm) I'm surprised they havent show that series on sci fi channel. i mean come on if they can run Jake 2.0 and all of its 12-13 episodes surely they can run War of the Worlds series.

If it was *John* Waters' project, I'd watch.

It's easy to see where the writers are coming from on this. If there ever was a time to have a little fun at the expense of irrational human beings it would be ... let me see .... oh yeah ... RIGHT NOW!

*sigh* Yet another attempt to reconstitute a done series. Yes, 3rd Rock - 2 men & a woman trying to get home & learning about life on Earth in the meantime.

Sci-Fi HAS a original show that ISN'T a copy of an old show, why don't they renew IT instead of attempting to reanimate old series?? Just renew the Dresden Files and have something actually WORTH watching! dresdencity.org

I agree with Zarina!

Why does the Sci-Fi channel keep making shows that are basically just copies of other shows? Especially when they have original shows that do great and gain a lot of fans after the first few shows.

I wish that they would bring The Dresden Files back.
