Warner Bros. Pictures has their eyes on The Red Star, a comic which blends sci-fi fantasy elements within an old Soviet era setting. Variety reports the studio is in negotiations to pick up the rights to Christian Gossett's comic book and have Neal Moritz produce via his Original Films banner. Jason Netter of comic-centric shingle Kickstart Productions is also on board as a producer. Universal Pictures wanted to bring the comic to life on the silver screen as well but development eventually fell apart.

Plot Concept: Based on the 1999 comic created by Christian Gossett, the story is centered in an alternate USSR where futuristic technology and magical elements co-exist. The main character is a soldier in the Red Fleet and his wife, who become keys to defeating a former brutal ruler and his minions.

This could be very cool... Red Star is a post WWII type universe filled with "Mech-Tech" stuff.

I always dig alternate history concepts like this one.  Two of my personal favs were the book Fatherland that dealt with the Nazis winning WWII (and would make for an excellent film if it were ever adapted into one), and a Superman storyline where his pod crashed in the Soviet Union and a Russian couple ended up raising him instead of the Kents.  He grew up to still become Superman, but fought for the side of communism instead of democracy.  Really neat concept.  I'd be interested in checking out Red Star for the same reason.

I remember this one. They even made a video game of it once. It's a good story and should be good as a movie.

Hey Jackwagon, They did make a movie of Fatherland.  It's an HBO movie staring Rutger Hauer and it's pretty good.  As for Red Star, I dunno, never read the mag, I'd have to see some concept art at least.

Fatherland sounds cool but that movie would NEVER be allowed in Germany.

Um, actually MrJawbreaking Equilibrium, Germany today is a free society and a free press and free speech (as long as you're not a holocaust denying idiot).  Fatherland the novel was in fact released as a Greman translation in Germany called (I think) Vaterland.  While I don't know how it sold in Germany, it was a huge hit in Europe in general.  As I said earlier, the movie was an HBO movie and while it may or may not have been translated or subtitled to German, it had nothing to do with what is allowed there.

I wouldn't be surprised if so many elements of the story are changed that it bears little if any resemblance to the comic.  Like that the setting will be changed to a totalitarian US instead of the USSR.

@reek

Except that you're wrong when it comes to anything regarding the Nazis.  They've got very strict anti-Nazi laws that go so far as to make games like the WW2 Call of Duty games remove all swastikas, or face being banned.

I know that the swastika is banned as a symbol of an inconstitutional organization but we're not really talking about iconography here.  The book has in fact been translated into German and sold there.  Feel free to check it out.  While they do restrict free speech when it comes specifically to Nazi history (it's illegal to own Mein Kampf for instance) they are not trying to hide from their shameful past.  Interestingly too is that the ban really seems to only apply to video games.  Movies like Valkyrie are shown in Germany even though they are laden with swastikas.

Seems like a remember Fatherland being made into a movie.  Rutger Hauer was in it.
