WB Decides to Reboot Darker SUPERMAN

It didn't take long for Warner Bros. executives to decide the fate of their Superman franchise. Just a few days after Anne Thompson wrote a blog on the film possibly being in turnaround, Warner Bros. Pictures Group President Jeff Robinov has gone on record with the Wall Street Journal confirming the reboot. From what is being said in circles, this reboot will likely be in the same style as the recent Incredible Hulk, which brought back the character but ignored Ang Lee's 2003 film.

Along with confirming the reboot of the Man of Steel, Robinov confirmed that DC will switch to Marvel's strategy of releasing individual superhero films with darker tones ala their recent smash hit The Dark Knight.

With "Batman vs. Superman" and "Justice League" stalled, Warner Bros. has quietly adopted Marvel's model of releasing a single film for each character, and then using those movies and their sequels to build up to a multicharacter film. "Along those lines, we have been developing every DC character that we own," Mr. Robinov says.

Like the recent Batman sequel -- which has become the highest-grossing film of the year thus far -- Mr. Robinov wants his next pack of superhero movies to be bathed in the same brooding tone as "The Dark Knight." Creatively, he sees exploring the evil side to characters as the key to unlocking some of Warner Bros.' DC properties. "We're going to try to go dark to the extent that the characters allow it," he says. That goes for the company's Superman franchise as well.

The studio is set to announce its plans for future DC movies in the next month. For now, though, it is focused on releasing four comic-book films in the next three years, including a third Batman film, a new film reintroducing Superman, and two movies focusing on other DC Comics characters. Movies featuring Green Lantern, Flash, Green Arrow, and Wonder Woman are all in active development.

Ummmm.... no.

WB still doesn't "get it". Its not the darkness of the character, its not the "humor", its a well told story that stays true to the essence of the character. X-Men: The Last Stand was dark. Was it good? I thought it was alright, but it wasn't good. Anmg Lee's Hulk was dark, too. I liked it, but again, failure.

People want to see a Superman that is awe inspiring, not an angst driven, brooding Man of Steel. Should there be darkness in the story? Yeah, but lets not make that a focal point, please.

See J, the guys at WB were checking out Mania and saw that most of us were clamoring for a reboot. Sorry, I know you liked SR but good sense prevails yet again :)

I think I've made my opinions about SR pretty clear since I saw it. So I'm happy to hear this. Don't just explore Superman's dark side fix all his supporting characters, especially Lex. Give us a Brainiac or Bizarro story. These characters I think could best help explore any dark impulses he may have.

How bout changing the article picture so it ain't the same as the other one?

Gatefan • Aug 22, 2008, 01:22pm •
It will be hard to do a dark Superman unless you radically change the whole character. Superman is a beacon of light, truth, justice and the American way. Batman is supposed to be dark. This is a bad idea.

Sure Hanso.

And everyone knows my thoughts on this whole idea so I'll just sit back and listen to you guys. The idea of molding what Nolan did with Batman onto other WB/DC franchises seems like a joke to me.

Superman is not Batman. Making a dark Superman isn't going to automatically spell out the same success as The Dark Knight.

Anyway, it's a nice article. Honestly, reboot was the only way to go with Superman. Glad it's happening and hopefully they get good talent for the movie.

On the rest of the article:

I'm a bit upset that I'll have to wait for Justice League, but if it means a new cast I'll take it. With DC going the Marvel route I think it's going to be Green Lantern & Wonder Woman to be the other 2 films WB wants for 2011/2012 besides Superman & Batman.
By the way, I had no idea there was a Superman vs. Batman movie planned. I heard about it back when Wolfgang Petersen wanted to do it and then WB decided to go with Begins & SR.

TDK was a game changer but not all the DC characters are dark. I'm sure they can do a dark Green Arrow but not many DC characters lend themselves to that. They can't all be Batman.

If they are doing individual flicks for each hero, will they scrap Supermax and give Green Arrow more of an origin story? Supermax sounds intersting, they better not scrap it.

I'm ready for Green Lantern!

thanks jarrod.

While I feel badly for Singer, he's well off enough, and this may be the single best commercial effect. For studio heads to want to make things more complex is quite a revolutionary thing. I'd rather they go this route than opt for more silliness, which studios are always happy to do. Thank you, Mr. Nolan! It's not Battlestar Galactica quality, but it'll do.

Rejoice, you freebooting re-booters!SuperJesus(and son)is dead. On the third day rises The Man of Steel. I personally could live with the Singer set-up for Supes but in thinking about it from DC/WB viewpoint, you want a format that will easily continue into a franchise and sadly the SR scenario with Lil' Supes makes that harder. I'm gonna miss him. The father-son speech Superman repeated from his father to his own son still brings tears to my eyes.
Since they are doing the new re-red booting of Supes, I hope they go for a more down-to-earth portrayal of him similar to Lois & Clark and Smallville. Meaning, he is Clark Kent, alien orphan raised by midwest farmers with good values who choses to use his abilities to help the world because it is the right thing to do. Not portrayed as Kal-El, last son of Krypton, who must pretend to be gumpy Kent for a disguise.
The field is completely open for billionaire Lex Luthor too, instead of evil criminal genius Luthor.

I'm not sure what he means by "darker" for the movies. I hope he means a somewhat more realistic portrayal of the various heroes and not some film noir gritty, dirty feel. I don't want my Wonder Woman all messy.

It also makes it easier for a Justice League movie later on if they are all starting out from a similar reality as the Dark Knight movie.

hanso, The problem with Supermax is that it's jumping the gun. If you're doing origin flicks before JLA then Supermax should be way down the line. Once our heroes had the chance to incarcerate all these super villains.

I think some guys are getting the idea that by "dark" it is somehow going to be like TDK. I think it's meant to be "darker" than what we're used to for said character and exploring any dark impulses or insecurities that may lead one to the wrong path. It doesn't have to be TDK dark to achieve that goal.
