A new award winning sci-fi franchise may be hitting a theater near you soon. Dan Simmons' Hugo Award winning novel Hyperion has just been picked up by producer Graham King and Warner Bros. Trevor Sands is already on board to adapt the first two books as one feature film. The first book won the Hugo for best novel of 1990 while its sequel, The Fall of Hyperion, took home a Nebula nomination.

Plot Concept:
"Hyperion" deals with a space war, with most of the action taking place on a planet named Hyperion, known not only for its electricity-spewing trees but also for the Time Tombs, large artifacts that can move through time. The tombs are guarded by a monster called the Shrike, which impales people on metal trees.

These books are among the best SF ever written. I'm skeptical you could pull the 1st book off in 2 movies. That said, I'd love to see the Shrike in action.

I read these books about ten years ago, and I remember that I really liked them. I have been meaning to reread them but have only bought the third and fourth book so far, and it's no fun starting with those so...
But there's no way they can make one movie from the first two books ! What I remember from the first book is that it just deals with the life-stories of the seven (or possibly eight, ten years is a long time ) travellers. They are cool stories but you can't make a movie just from the first book because it would seem to have no goal.
There's going to have to be major cuts and pastes in the storie to get this movie to a big public.
Here's hoping they don't screw it up.

Yeah, I'm also skeptical about the two novels in one movie format. Did they read the same books? Actually, I think it might work better as a TV Series -- kind of like Lost.

I really liked these books but they're probably going to streamline it since the first book was broken into several stories like Canterbury Tales, which kinda makes me sad because I really liked how that was structured.
