WB Moving Forward with I AM LEGEND Prequel

We've known of an I Am Legend prequel in development for a few months with director Francis Lawrence holding no secrets about it. Still, Variety confirms that Warner Bros. is officially moving forward with the director back and leading star Will Smith returning to the Robert Neville character. Akiva Goldsman and his Weed Road banner will produce with James Lassiter, Smith’s partner in Overbrook Entertainment, who likewise produced the first film last year. D.B. Weiss is set to write a script that is based on a detailed outline that was hatched over the past few months by Smith, Goldsman, Lassiter and Lawrence.

Plot Concept:
The prequel will chronicle the final days of humanity in New York before a man-made virus caused a plague that left Smith’s character the lone survivor among a mutated mob in the city. His character was killed in the first film, after extracting a potential cure for the virus for the scattered survivors.

I thought some of the final days of humanity were already shown in the film via flashbacks?!? Just what we needed, a flashback of the flashbacks!

This is exactly why they should have went with the original director`s cut ending of the movie! It is a million times better than the theatrical version and not only adds to the story but stays more in line with the themes of the book, which to me is a far better story, although I did really enjoy Smith's I AM LEGEND.

A prequel would work, but I mean we know what happened. They quarantine Manhattan. Its spreads all over the world. Most get infected and the ones that don`t either go into hiding or end up as food for the infected. The End.

What would be cool is if they adapted a few of those comic book shorts that are on the DVD. Those were pretty cool.

Sweet! Can't go wrong with Will. They need to fix the FX of the creatures though.

I'm surprised Will is down for this.
Obviously we know how it all happens but you can still work in quite a few scares telling the beginning of the story.

Will hasn't done a stinker in a long time. So I'll reserve judgment.

I liked how the first one gave the history through frantic flashbacks, and I worry that they won't be able to capture the necessary fear and paranoia in a prequel. Hanso is right though, they need to use traditional effects. CGI monsters was the biggest mistake I Am Legend made. Could have been much scarier..

Do we really need a prequel to this movie? I am sure Will Smith will do a bang-up job in this, or most anything he does, but c'mon.

The story has been told how about doing something classy and let the story stand, as is. Sometimes mystery is best, no need to explain everything to death.

If the matrix didn't have sequels, people would have screamed, cried and begged for them, but imagine a world without it's sequels. We could all talk about what a kick ass movie it was and could have been with sequels other than the ones we would have come up with in our own deluded heads. hehe.

I didn't hate the sequels to the matrix, but they did suffer from trying to outdo the first one.

Either way I'm sure a prequel would be good with Will aboard, and yes I'd pay money to see it. But, like I asked, why?

Money. I'm sure.

Sorry if anyone saw double or triple posts from me.

I agree this doesn't need to be done. The virus infecting the world thing has been done to death... Resident Evil 3, Doomsday, most Zombie movies these days, all kins of the same. The originality which is I AM LEGEND is how the world is with one person left. The loneliness that Neville felt everyday, that is the heart of the movie and what made it good. Kinda like Castaway but with Vampire types.

How do the sequels to the Matrix affect the Matrix? The Matrix is still kick ass regardless of the quality of the sequels.
Samething with remakes. They don't change the original.

Moving forward I am going to save all of my poop to fling at the screen when this opens.
