With Universal Pictures planning to send Asteroids into a theater near you, it looks like Warner Bros. Pictures wants to jump into the classic videogame-to-space movie market. The Los Angeles Times reports that the studio is negotiating to acquire feature rights to classic video game Space Invaders from Taito, the Japanese company that originally manufactured the game in 1978.

The game was later licensed for production in the United States by Midway, which Warner Bros. acquired last year. The project would be produced by Mark Gordon (Saving Private Ryan), Jason Blum and Guymon Casady.

Space Invaders was the iconic game that helped start it all, a Japanese-created arcade title from 1978 that featured roving attacking ships raining vertical fire on the player's craft, which dodged and fired back. It later vaulted to prominence via the Atari 2600.

Aliens of the worst kind attack the earth! The kind that have a plan! Their plan??? To move back and forth across a finite area of the sky, gradually moving lower... and lower... and lower... until they destroy the Earth!!!! ....Yes, the Earth!!!

Fortunately, they have made a fatal error! They happen to be moving back and forth over the one weapon that can save the day. A... ummmm... single shot canon that happens to be able to move back and forth along the same area that the conniving aliens have hatched their devious plan.

Oh... and Meagan Fox is in it...

This is awesome news. If this movie is a box office success, then more of these will follow. Perhaps my dream of a Pong movie might eventually happen.

Ooh, Megan Fox? I am so there.

Seriously, though. If they insist on doing this, they should do something similar to what I've said they should do with Battlship.  Just make a good alien invasion movie, and use the game name solely for name recognition.

Speaking of invaders... remember that movie Invaders from Mars in the 80s with the Martians that were giant heads with legs?

Anyways...  Make it about a lone spaceship fighting an alien invasion and you got a good movie... wait that was The Last Starfighter.

Of course the name is being used for marketable purposes only since there's no reason you wouldn't be able to do the film with a different name, same thing with Battleship.

Btw, I can see alien ships dropping off cacoons or pods inhabited by alien monsters which you have to shoot down like the game. The ones that land have some enormous aliens just killing people and are much harder to kill on the ground.

Well I'm done, I've used up all my brain power for today

I hear ya FFT!  Waaay before the Scooby Doo movies came out, I thought if someone had a really good mystery movie script that it would work if the protagonists just happened to be some teenagers with a funny dog (that didn't talk).  No real need for a CGI Great Dane.

While I still think that would work, the Scooby Doo movies that were made were actually way better than I ever expected them to be.  To this day the reveal of the villan in that first movie still owns me because I never saw that coming!  (Yeah, I tried to be Spoiler free, even though at this point everybody who is going to see that movie probably already has.)

They should just re-make the Last Starfighter.  Otherwise this is just going to be retarded.  Unless they do a major spoof and make it silly as h*ll.

Im with axia. Make it a satire and it has the potential to be funny.
