WB President talks SUPERMAN sequel

Warner Bros. Pictures' President, Alan Horn, spoke with the Los Angeles Times about the box office performance of SUPERMAN RETURNS and his plans for a sequel.

The LA Times writes, "Horn expects "Superman Returns" to eventually gross about $400 million worldwide, more than last year's hit "Batman Begins." Nonetheless, "Superman" fell at least $100 million short of his expectations.

"I thought it was a very successful movie, but I think it should have done $500 million worldwide," Horn said. "We should have had perhaps a little more action to satisfy the young male crowd."

"Still, he's betting Warner has firmly reestablished the "Superman" franchise and is planning another installment for summer 2009."

In the link above, Horn also talks about the disappointing year that WB is having in general (Poseidon, Lady in the Water, Ant Bully, Superman Returns, ATL) and the expected loss for the studio. Regardless, it looks as if WB is ready to give the sequel to SUPERMAN RETURNS a green light, now the question is whether or not their 50-50 financing partner, Legendary Pictures, feels the same.

Definately more action...and lets move on to another super villian please. Lex is getting a little long in the tooth with four movie appearances and a weekly TV show. You'd think he was Supermans only nemesis!

Before the bashing begins, lets keep an open mind gang.... I am on the fence with SR, but if it's sequel is to it what superman 2 was to the origional Superman we could be in for something worth seeing. Singer did not reinvent hear, he made a sequel.... now that we have the origional story reintroduced he can take off in new directions.

I'd love to see Brainiac.

I completely agree with ultrazilla. Please no more Lex! Brainiac, Metallo, the Ultra-Humanite even. Anybody but Lex for the sequel. Although let me modify that -- Singer has made a couple of suggestions that Zod may appear in the sequel. Please let him be kidding! Superman Returns was way too much of a retread of the Superman: The Movie. Let's not have the sequel be a retread of Superman II. Some originality, please.

Haven't we all been through this already? No need to keep bashing Superman Returns. If they make the sequel, I'm sure it will be the Superman that everyone wants to see. And if it's not, then they probably won't make anymore after it. Lex Luthor will more than likely be in the sequel. Not as the primary villain, but as an instigator. Much like Hackman was in Superman II and IV. I just hope they consider a villain besides Zod, as they mentioned. How about revisiting the Superman Lives script? I think they had something with that one.

I absolutely loved loved loved Superman Returns, and I really hope that all the same people, both in front of and behind the camera, are involved in the sequel. Bring it, and I will be there.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I loved Superman Returns and am really hoping they green-light a sequel. And yes a little more action would be great as long as it doesn't mean sacrificing a great story. And by the way, it would be cool to see Brainiac.

And one more thing. It wouldn't hurt to recast Lois Lane...

"..a little more action" You think?
