Weak Weekend for Genre Films

By: Steve Biodrowski
Date: Monday, March 27, 2000

It was a weak weekend for science fiction, horror, and fantasy at the movie box office. New Line's FINAL DESTINATION, was the top genre film for the weekend, placing 3rd behind ERIN BROKOVICH and ROMEO MUST DIE. The simple-mind psuedo-spooky teen slashfest dropped only 29% in its sophomore outing, earning $7.1-million. Touchstone's MISSION TO MARS fell 49%, landing in 4th place with $5.8-million. And multi-Oscar winner AMERICAN BEAUTY climbed 25%, adding another $3.9-million to its take, good enough for 7th place. In only its third week in release, Roman Polanski's THE NINTH GATE dropped out of the Top Ten.
