Weekend Box Office Report: CARS Wins!

Date: Monday, June 12, 2006

Disney/Pixar's animated film CARS easily took the top spot for the week with an estimated gross of $62,800,000. The gross is very solid, and in-line with expectations. Reviews for CARS, while very good, have been slightly worse than past Pixar films.

THE BREAK UP nabbed second place, pulling in $20,495,000. The latest X-MEN installment rounded out the top 3, and became the highest grossing film of the year while passing the $200 million mark.

THE OMEN finished 4th for the weekend, pulling in over $15 million and ensuring that future horror remakes will be on the way for years to come.

It should be noted once again that these numbers are estimates. CARS gross will likely drop when the actual numbers come out, though it should stay north of $60 million.

"THE OMEN finished 4th for the weekend, pulling in over $15 million and ensuring that future horror remakes will be on the way for years to come."

Umm, being that it was hyped up, falling to fourth place behind two other previous releases isn't exactly what I'd consider successful. But as far as the horror remakes go, Hollywood will keep on anally raping our beloved horror classics as long as dumbasses keep paying to go see them.

I saw Cars with my kids and two nephews. Just ok in my book. Next to no laughs, but thoughtful story.
Totally "Doc Hollywood" though.

I have to agree with post #2. We've seen the story many times, but Pixar still delivered a fairly entertaining movie. The animation was amazing, but I don't know if I laughed at all during the movie, which is a first for me seeing a Pixar film. Plus, I didn't really connect with any of the characters, if that makes any sense. I'm not really into cars, so maybe that's why, I don't know. The important thing is the kids loved it and talked about the movie all the way home. The Break-Up was ok, and the "Telly Savalas" bit was funny, but I hated the ending. For being pretty much blasted by everyone, X-Men 3 and DaVinci Code have really done well. I figured X-Men 3 for $250 million. Poseidon is a big loser though.

I saw the Omen and it was pretty good. Not great, but pretty good. I guess knowing how it's supposed to end took away the suspense of the film. I do hope they re-make II and III, update them and make them better.

I'm surprised. I dont' think I've ever seen a trailer for Cars. Other than a poster at the theatre I didn't know this film existed

I'd have to say that Cars was probably Pixar's weakest movie to date, but that still puts it ahead of most of the CGI animation competition. It had a lot of cute moments, and at least one big laugh (the tractor-tipping scene). The CGI visuals were stunning, as we've come to expect from Pixar. But I don't think this one will grow the "legs" that Finding Nemo had. Nemo had a storyline which was relatable to both kids and parents, which I think was a large part of its box office success.

Pixar turned me off to their movies after I saw The Incredibles, which I thought was awful. I laughed maybe once. The reviews of people who saw Cars on this thread don't seem to be that good. I'll most likely skip it. My friend loaned me the "at home edition" of the Da Vinci Code this weekend. I thought it was a pretty entertaining movie.

That's odd most people I know loved the Incredibles and saw it as a chance to break away from typical "Kiddie" fodder. It's my personal favorite Pixar release.

DragonRift--"The Omen" only made $15 million over the weekend, but $35 million since Tuesday. I think the studio will take that, and call it successful.

#1-DragonRift: The reason $15million and 4th place is acceptable with a total since opening of $35million is because the movie only cost $25million to make.
Meaning its likely to finish north of $50million for its run, maybe reach $60million.

As for the rest I'm glad to see X:3 surpass the $200 mark. Its a good movie with a few flaws but enjoyable still. DaVinci code was a good movie as well and I hope it can muster enough steam to cross $200 US domestic as well.

The surprise on the list is Robin Williams comedy vehcicle "RV". Its been out 7 weeks and is still hanging in the top 10. Its above POSEIDON and made more money than it, and it only cost $50million to make. The studio couldn't be happier I'm sure.
