The happy seem to be getting happier.  The animated film Happy Feet was able to remain atop the box office for yet another weekend despite cries that it is nothing more than global warming propaganda.

Taking in another $17 million, Happy Feet is well on it's way to making close to $200 million domestically.  Also fairing well is Casino Royale which managed another $15 million for the weekend.  The latest Bond flick has seen solid holds through it's run and has now grossed over $300 million world-wide.

The new films for the weekend didn't fair quite as well.  The biblical film The Nativity Story was unable to inspire it's religious base the way Passion of the Christ was able to.  As such, it managed a paltry $8 million on almost 3200 screens.  Not good, the film will have to hope for very strong holds over the Christmas holiday ... which isn't out of the question.

In other box office news ... Turistas managed only $3.4 million (yuck), but wasn't to be out flopped as National Lampoon's Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj managed only $2.2 million (barf).

Until next week ...

The box office is and always will be a mystery for me ! Bond doing good, shame for pierce Brosnan, i really think they completely turn a new page, and it s working. I still didn t see that movie. i am maybe the frist one to write the comment but the last to watch the movie, i am not on the same time zone...

I really should go see Flushed Away before its...flushed away? I didnt realize that Fountain has been out for 10 (or 2?) weeks already. MANIA peoples maybe we could put the movie list into an excel HTML [tables?] spreadsheet so its easier to read?

yeah, the fountain is a surprise, i was thinking this one will be on the top. only 8 millions, very desapointed. Did you see it ?

exfan, I don't see why Casino Royale's box office success is a "shame for Brosnan." Brosnan's movies were quite successful, certainly nothing to be ashamed of. Don't think of it as a Craig vs. Brosnan referrendum at the box office, think of it as two actors who have contributed to the success of an enduring franchise. There was not much in the way of interesting new releases for the past two weeks, so I saw a couple of older releases. Flushed Away was OK, but nothing great as far as animated movies go. It's sort of odd to see Aardman's characters done as CGI, but in general I just found the movie to be not that engaging, although it's fun eye-candy. Then I saw "Stranger Than Fiction," which was also an entertaining movie, although there are better examples of this type of existential movie out there. Looking at next week's releases, I'd say if Apocalypto isn't a surprise box office success, I daresay we may actually be looking at Bond and the penguins at the top of the heap again next weekend...

Didn't go to the theater this weekend; nothing new I wanted to see. I'm glad to see Casino Royale doing well. I agree with snallygaster; I don't look at it as Brosnan vs. Craig, but just a fresh look at a historied franchise. I was Superman Returns over the weekend on DVD. I found it took about 30 minutes to watch the movie because I hit the fast forward on the areas I didn't like and i watched the plane rescue three times. I really hope the next one will be better.

Didn't see anything new this weekend, either. I'm interested in seeing the Fountain and maybe Stranger than Fiction , but I don't know if I'll wait for DVD or not. Boy, you can't keep those penguins and 007 down. Totally agree with Snallygaster and Wessmith on Bond. i though Casino was great. I did really like the Brosnan movies, but the producers decided it was time for a change and the public obviously agrees.

monkeyfoot...To each their own, but you might want to wait to see The Fountain on DVD, or at least only pay matinee pricing. The movie is a visual feast, I'll give it that much, but it was depressing and just plain boring. I wanted to like it, but just couldn't get into it at all. I'm sure others liked it and will give you their thoughts, too.

I agree, this is not about Brosnan vs. Craig. If that were the case, DAD trumped CR at the box office. And, that is not what it is about. I think it is just another version of an legendary icon. I must note that Brosnan was wanting a more serious Bond, minus elaborate stunts and gadgets for some time. He was on record as saying so many times. At one time Tarintino showed an interest in doing CR with Brosnan. Now that would have been an interesting movie.

The reality is Casino Royale is NOT doing very well in the US. Previous Christmas season movies such as the Harry Potter series and Lord of the Rings made 115m in their first weekends in the US alone. The studio is touting it as the biggest movie in the world at around $300m. Rings did that in the US and various other movies have made over 200m easily. Sony projects 160m-170m in the US for Casino. That's actually a dud here, the standard for a truly successful movie in the States has been 200m for quite awhile now. The producers lost a third of their audience with the choice of Craig as Bond(the long time hardcore Bond fans) Craig just isn't Bond, no matter how good an actor he may or may not be. If they had made a movie with a short, bald Superman there would have been an enormous uproar over making him something he never was, same applies to Bond.

werewuf, I have to disagree with you. While 200M is a good watermark for a blockbuster, 100M is still a good number for a "successful" movie. I'm sure you would agree that Bond has been one of the most popular franchises in movie history, but it has relied on international appeal, not just US $$$. While changing the lead may spark interest and controversy, it may or may not help the box office, especially in this case where generations have passed since the frst Bond and the original literary works. While this is a holiday release, it isn't a Christmas release (usually considered in the 10 days before xmas) and imo, 160-170 may be a little conservative and it may also maintain good numbers through xmas. If it does 160-170 it will become the highest grossing Bond in the US (Die Another Day is currently tops at slightly over 160 mil), this bodes well for the future as people will come to accept Craig and the "new look" Bond. Comparing it to some of the top moneymakers of all-time is a little unfair and calling it a dud is completely off the mark. The fact is this is a well reviewed, financially successful film, just what the franchise needed.
