Weekend Box Office Report: Museum still tops

By: Karl Schneider
Date: Sunday, December 31, 2006

The last film to top the weekend box office in 2006 will be Night at the Museum.  The film claims the spot for the second weekend in a row with a gross of over $37 million for the weekend.  That number is likely to drop to about $34 or $35 million when the actual numbers come out, but it is still a terrific gross for a film that is on it's way to over $200 million.

In second place we find Will Smith's Pursuit of Happyness with an estimated $19.3 million which puts the films total thus far just below the $100 million mark.

In other news ...

The musical Dreamgirls is off to a fantastic start, pulling in $15.5 million this weekend for a total of over $38 million.  Just about every film saw an increase from the previous weekend with the exception of Rocky Balboa which fell off by 6.6%.  Still, Rocky has made almost $50 million to date on a budget of only $25 million and it's still got a lot more money to earn, so nothing to worry about there.

The fantasy war film Pan's Labyrinth also opened this weekend on 17 screens in select cities.  It pulled in a per theater average of $35,000 for a total of $595,000 over the weekend.  A solid start for the film which expands wide on January 19th.

Until next week ...

1) Night at the Museum - 37.80 (116,855,000)
2) The Pursuit of Happyness - 19.30 (98,346,000)
3) Dreamgirls - 15.50 (38,464,000)
4) Charlotte's Web - 12.00 (52,858,000)
5) Rocky Balboa - 11.35 (48,822,000)
6) The Good Shepherd - 11.25 (35,311,000)
7) Eragon - 8.48 (56,689,000)
8) We Are Marshall - 8.03 (25,063,000)
9) Happy Feet - 7.84 (176,152,000)
10) The Holiday - 6.78 (50,011,000)
11) Blood Diamond - 5.00 (35,831,000)
12) Casino Royale - 4.50 (153,425,000)
13) Black Christmas - 4.12 (11,272,000)
14) Apocalypto - 3.40 (42,792,000)

Looks like the typical New Year's weekend "bounce," which is generally stronger than the Christmas weekend bounce. Otherwise it's quite a rarity to see virtually every movie improve on the previous weekend's box office numbers.

I'll be catching Night at the Museum today, but what I'm really waiting for is Pan's Labyrinth and Children of Men to open in wide release so they make it to my local cineplex.

I saw Pan's Labyrinth last night, it's really good. It's defiantely not one to take any kids to. The costumes, location and cinematography in the film are sharp. Doug Jones (Abe Sapien and Silver Surfer) plays two parts in the film (the faun and the pale man), he does a good job.

How is that movie number one?!?! The movie looked terrible and is still number one!

And Pan's Labyrinth is only out in 17 theaters so far in the USA so it will be awhile until you find it.

Went to see Night at the Museum with friends. I'm not a fan of Stiller or his films, but I must admit that the movie was fun. Not great, but fun holiday season entertainment. I hope everyone gets to see Rocky Balboa befoer it leaves theaters; it was a great final chapter in Rocky's story and I thought Stallone delivered a fine performance. Black Christmas was great fun, if you like "slasher films," which I do. I saw Casino Royale again over the weekend and it's definitely my favorite Bond movie. I'm glad it's a huge hit here in the US and overseas.

I just read that Indiana Jones IV has finally gotten the green light and that Lucas, Spielberg and Ford are all on the same page. Spielberg is putting his Lincoln movie on the shelf and doing Indy IV next. Apparently, Lucas let the details slip when he was at the Rose Parade on New Years Day.

I saw Rocky Balboa last night. I thought it was great! It's not very often that I find all aspects of a film executed so well. The acting, writing, lighting, the score, the cinematography were all done very well. I think it is a must see while it is in theatres!
