Weekend Box Office Report: Pirates Land!

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST stormed into theaters this past Friday night and boy did it ever leave an impression! When the dust settled, PIRATES had hauled in $55.5 million on Friday alone, a number that gives the film the single-day box office record (previously held by Revenge of the Sith with $50 million).

PIRATES didn't stop there, but instead continued to pull people to theaters as no other movie has since STAR WARS. PIRATES final tally sits at over $132 million for the first three days of it's run, and just about every notable record is notched into it's belt. A huge opening, amazing numbers, multiple records and good reviews; what more could you possibly ask for?

There were other movies playing, and most of them did surprisingly well considering. SUPERMAN RETURNS, however, wasn't one of them. The man of steel fell like a rock to $21.8 million, off 58% from the previous week. The number is probably over-estimated, and all but assures that the film won't finish above $200 million without a major push from the studio to get it there.

DEVIL WEARS PRADA fell a respectable 43% to $15.6 million while CLICK managed even better, falling only 39.8% to $12 million. CARS, however, lapped them both with a drop of only 29%, $10 million for the weekend, and $205 million for it's total gross thus far.

Next week we will see what kind of sea legs these pirates have, until then, go see a movie!

1 - Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - $132,028,000 ($132,028,000)
2 - Superman Returns - $21,850,000 ($141,677,000)
3 - The Devil Wears Prada - $15,600,000 ($63,696,000)
4 - Click - $12,000,000 ($105,921,000)
5 - Cars - $10,330,000 ($205,504,000)
6 - Nacho Libre - $3,339,000 ($73,813,000)
7 - The Lake House - $2,845,000 ($45,621,000)
8 - The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift - $2,484,000 ($57,369,000)
9 - Waist Deep - $1,861,000 ($19,167,000)

I am surprised it did so well but is not surprising since it was one of the most anticipated movies during the summer. Special effects were incredible though I thought it could have ended better. The third movie had better end the trilogy nicely as I remember how dissapointed I was with how the Matrix trilogy developed.

Disliking a movie because you wanted something different and slagging it off is one thing, but Renderman72, you are being just downright childish. I respected your opinion as you stated it about SR, but now, its just become a juvenile hatred to the point of it being almost sad. Has your life been made some much better now that SR is number 2 on the list? Do the roses smell fresher. Is your coffee and bagel that much more savory in the morning? It makes me think that maybe you are really the director that was supposed to get the job and Singer swooped in and took it. This is somehow your revenge.
And come on, we all knew POTC2 was going take over the box office and Supes would be number 2. It`s made 142 and still hasn't released in all of Europe. It will make its money back and there will be a sequel for you to bitch and moan about, which is what you probably secretly want.
Anyway, I saw POTC2 yesterday and I thought that it was really good. My girl liked it, but didn't really get the plot and my sister thought it was too long. JD was great as Sparrow as usual. Bloom was wooden, as usual and Nighy was a great Davy Jones. I was surprised by the ending when you know shows up walking down the stairs. My only real problem with the movie was that it was more of a set up for a sequel, than an actual stand alone movie like the 1st one, which I think took a little away from it, but not much. I`d recommend it to people, but it seems like judging from the B.O. numbers, I don't have to. What`s next as far as Blockbusters, this Summer? Its been a slow one.

It was just a really entertaining movie, which is what it should be. The consummate Summer movie. 2 thumbs up!!

The ending gave me a very "Empire Strikes Back" feel. I think it was just as much a set up for a sequel as "Empire" was. I thought it was a great ending. One thing I wondered though, how come the monkey was still undead? Wasn't that the whole deal in the first one? They needed Will's blood because they needed blood from everyone who took the gold and then the curse is lifted for all of them? Maybe special curse rules apply to monkeys.

Sorry renderman, but 140 million is hardly a flop. I also agree with ponyboy that your attitude about SR is getting sad.

Pirates was a great movie, even if a little strange in some places. It definitely set itself (and us) for a conclusion, so I can't wait to hopfully see some closure to some of it. Depp and Bloom were, in a word, superb.

As to Superman Returns, I mean come on guys - it was a really, really good movie. The approach was a little awkward, I will grant, but hey - consider that 1) it's not a reboot, and 2) integrating the new actors into a franchise several years since vindicated, it was top notch. When I think about Superman III (er, excuse me, "Richard Pryor I") and the rest, I thought the series was absolutey dead - maybe even worse than dead, just like the Batman sequels that got so {bleep} weird and plain stupid. Slapstick comedy and poor script writing did all of those in - here SR made it's point loud and clear. Give an idea serious treatment, make it follow a line of flow to a conclusion, throw in a few surprises. Pirates II did the same thing, did it not?

Maybe a little better, but hey - this englishman is NOT complaining. Both films are very, very well done. Like ponyboy76 - both thumbs for BOTH films are UP!

Let me add for any Batman fans: Batman Begins last summer was a fresh reboot, also very well done - a little draggy in the beginning, but still, very well done. I do not include it in the films mentioned in the previous post... KYE

The kids loved POTC2 and SR. I liked Pirates (not as much as the first one), but thought it was a little long and Orlando Bloom is just boring to watch on screen. The swordfight set between the three protagonists was terrific. Nighy was great as Davy Jones and the effects on him and his crew were just amazing. I enjoyed Superman Returns even more the second time around. Renderman72, I think that Superman Returns will make money for the studio, and I wouldn't consider it a "flop" (it'll be huge on DVD), but it's definitely an underachiever. That's a shame, because I think it's a terrific movie. I have no doubt there will be a sequel, but it'll have to have Superman actually fight someone on a similar power level to put people into the seats. This movie just reintroduced the world to Superman; the next film will show everyone why he is the greatest hero of all. i don't know if Singer will be the right director for a second movie; maybe a Michael Bay wham bam extravaganza?

Superman should make good money overseas. i read this weekend that while Davinci Code made a little over $200 million in the states, the movie made $465 million overseas. Wow! Since Superman is a worldwide iconic figure, maybe it'll do similar numbers.
