Weekend Box Office Report: Pirates Rule

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN has done it again. After opening to record numbers, Pirates continues to sail along to the tune of monstrous profits. In it's second weekend in theaters, Pirates fell only 54% to over $62 million, a weekend total that very few movies manage on their OPENING weekend, let alone their second.

LITTLE MAN and YOU, ME and DUPREE were both new to theaters this weekend, and both of them put up respectable grosses around $21 million.

SUPERMAN fell off another 46% to $11 million. The film hasn't been able to find the legs that BATMAN BEGINS rode to a $200+ million gross despite it's low-er opening. The movie now must hope to extends its audience via DVD.

CARS continues to hold very well as the lone animated film in the top 10, falling only 29% to $7.5 million. The film has made about $220 million to date.

If you have any questions about the box office, or would just like to chat about various movies, feel free to drop me a line at kschneider@cinescape.com. Until next week!

Big Ups to Pirates $258 big ones in 2 weeks.. Wow... Iam not surprised that its doing so well..
Iam wondering if Spidey 3 can break these records that have recently been broken by drunken mumbling pirates.

Bloody hell, 'A Scanner Darkly' is really lighting-up the box office!

Looks like Superman, is a Super DUD! lol... they need to reboot this or put it back on the shelf.

I`m not surprised in the least. POTC2 was great and plenty of other people obviously agree. It is an entertaining all around film.
I feel bad for A Scanner Darkly, because it looks like a cool flick. I think it would have done better if came out in the beginning or end of the year. Its not really a Summer blockbuster type of flick.
On another note, I saw Superman Returns yesterday. Now, in my opinion, it was a quality movie. It may have not been what the fanboys wanted, and I would have preferred if Supes got to actually fight someone, but it was great none the less. They also could have trimmed like 10 mins off of it.

SPOILER SPOILER

The kid thing didn't really hurt the story, but in my head I was hoping that the kid didn't actually do anything "super" during the movie. It should have just been left up in the air, but I get why it wasn't. The whole movie had Father/Son overtones. Its funny because last week people here talked about the Jesus/Savior overtones, but the people I talked to the saw it here in the U.K. didn't even notice them.
Renderman72, I will agree that Brandon Routh in some scenes does look really young, but I don't think that takes away from the movie. I didn't really like Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane, but that also didn't really take anything away from the film. Spacey was a good Luthor. A mix between Hackman and the comic book.
My only real question is how the hell was he planning to build on that land? It was part crystal and somewhat brittle. It reminded me of the surface of the asteroid in Armageddon.
In the end I think this new Superman can go anywhere from here. I hope that they don't let the kid thing pigeon hole the story. And they really need to have a Supervillian in the next one, besides Zod. Luthor will be in it, but he can just be made a pawn, for his/her`s bigger plans. Darkseid would be perfect for that. He could try and take over the planet and use Lex, who knows that Supes has a son, to hold it over the Man

I wouldn't call Superman a Superdud at $163,648,000 BUT it's not a great movie and will fade away under the swashbuckling Pirates.

And I agree with ponyboy76. (***SPOILER***)
I too was thinking they should have kept the kid from doing anything and leave us guessing. Instead, having made a small manifest, they left me thinking he should have done more... and then in thinking he should do more, I felt like this did risk becoming "Superboy" and I got even more annoyed.

As to "A Scanner Darkly" - as much as I'd like to see more animated films, I am not a fan of this style of rotoscope. I hated "A Waking Life" and the samples I've seen from "A Scanner Darkly" have equally rubbed me the wrong way.

As to Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, I got to see it a second time and enjoyed it just as much as the first. My ex-girlfriend went with me and disliked the dark tone to the film, but I found myself even more engaged into Keira's Elizabeth Swan. She played the role so well and you can feel the anguish in her at the end.

Browbeat, that`s exactly something I didn't like about POTC2.

Spoiler Spoiler

The way Elizabeth acted towards Jack at the end seemed a little, out of character. I wouldn't of guessed that she would so willingly sacrifce Jack`s life. Jack`s conscience would get the better of him and I don't even think he would do that. I thought it was foul.

Is "A Scanner Darkly" in wide release yet? It hasn't made an appearance at any of my area theaters yet. If it's still in limited release, that would explain the low box office.

If I start saying things like "Superman Sucks!" and calling it SuperBOY Returns, can we make this go on for 300+ posts?

Disney's got to be loving life right now with two films taking in over $220 million! I saw Superman Returns for a third time Saturday with a couple of friends who aren't comic book fans. They thought the film look terrific, but thought Kate looked way too young, wanted Superman to hit something and said "Superman has a kid?" They cheered at the plane rescue and the super heroics, but other than that they didn't like it. With foreign grosses added, the film has made $200 million, but I still think that's a disappointing number. Sure, it will make a lot of bank on DVD releases, but homepfully Warner gets the message that people want a Superman movie filled with action and heroics and not overdrawn drama.
