Weekend Box Office Report: PIRATES in a VICE

Michael Mann's new film, MIAMI VICE, has toppled PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN from the top spot. Pulling in a little over $25 million for the weekend, MIAMI VICE had what can be called a solid opening weekend. Will 'a solid' opening be enough to appease the studio who dropped about $150 million to produce the film? Probably not.

While VICE may have taken the top spot, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN continued it's impressive run with a $20 million weekend haul. The film will soon join an elite group of movies which have managed to pull in $400 million at the domestic box office. Very impressive.

Much less impressive however, is the remainder of the top 10. While newcomer JOHN TUCKER MUST DIE secured a very respectable $14 million, ANT BULLY only found $8 million as it failed to pull kids into theaters. Animated films aimed at younger ages tend to have good to great legs in comparison with other films, but I wouldn't expect the same for ANT BULLY as it faces tough competition. MONSTER HOUSE and CARS remain in theaters, while BARNYARD releases this coming weekend. Where animated films used to be few and far between, they are quickly becoming a dime a dozen.

SUPERMAN RETURNS fell hard to $3.8 million this weekend. The influx of new films is taking a toll on it's theater count and you can expect it to continue to drop large amounts of theaters in coming weeks. As the film has now fallen out of the Top 10, it is now safe for us to look back and analyze it's run. Not hard, it is clearly a disappointment. I never would have believed the film would have failed to reach $200 million earlier this year. With solid reviews and a good film to sell, is this debacle to be blamed on the marketing department or were we just not ready for the man of steel? I don't have an answer for that question.

I will say this: I hope the movie continues to grow it's audience on DVD. While it may not appease everyone, the overall opinion has been resoundingly positive and I would like to see more of Singer's vision for this franchise.

1. Miami Vice - $25,195,000 ($25,195,000)
2. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - $20,492,000 ($358,372,000)

Hopefully SR will pick up on the international circuit - it deserved a better performance as it was a damn fine film.

My brothers are praising MONSTER HOUSE right now and another friend of mine loved MIAMI VICE. Looks like a pretty good diversity of films in the theater right now...

POTC2 is still raking in that bank. I feel a little sorry for SR, but I already saw it so, really, who cares? I`ll be watching MiAMI vICE this weekend. I can't believe Little Man is still up there. I think I know exactly why its still there but I'm going to leave it alone.

Superman Returns was a disappointment...even to me...and I liked the picture. I just expected more from it and thought Singer would deliver it. I just hope the execs at Warner Bros. don't make the mistake of shutting the door on Superman for another 20 years...because I think the next film could be a real good one.
I think SR suffered because it sort of had to be a pseudo "origin" story as well as regular flick...the whole being gone for 5 years etc...
The next one won't have to deal with that issue and they can concentrate on the villain and Superman himself. While I would like a new villian to make an appearance..I'm not one of those that is automatically brushing aside Zod as a valid villain choice...he could be great if handled well.

I just have one request if a SR sequel ever comes to be ---- CHANGE THE F$&#ING SUIT!!! I mean, it was Superman, yet it wasn't Superman. That bugged me the most. I just couldn't see it.

I loved SR. Just disappointed with the BO numbers. This was the same with BB. I thoght that would do better in the BO but just passeed $200 million. Oh well. Does not really matter. I will get SR on DVD and enjoy the movie at home.

I don't think marketing is to blame at all for Superman Returns, it just wasn't that good of a movie. People didn't want to go see it again, well, not enough people. I think the blame is all on Singer. He tried something and failed. He wanted to recreate the Superman movie he remembered as a child, thinking everyone who loved the first one would love his and their kids would love SR too. He should've started over instead.

I can't agree with you, Karl -- SR was derivative and sappy, devoid of the meat that makes Superman great, and a huge step down for Mr. Singer. I doubt the DVD numbers will lift this slow moving soap opera out of the fizzle category.
