Weekend Box Office Report: Ricky Bobby wins again

Date: Monday, August 14, 2006

TALLADEGA NIGHTS: THE BALLAD OF RICKY BOBBY held off some tough competition and hung on to the top spot for the weekend despite not being the top grossing film on Friday. That honor went to STEP UP, but the film's poor internal weekend multiplier allowed RICKY BOBBY to move ahead and snatch the top spot.

Regardless of the second place finish, STEP UP's $21 million gross is both a bit unexpected and exceptional. The studio will be thrilled with this weekend's total, however, don't expect much from the film in the coming weeks. With such bad reviews, poor WOM and the poor internal weekend multiplier, expect this film to fall fast and hard in the coming weeks.

Speaking of poor reviews, PULSE released this weekend to disappointing reviews and box office receipts. The film managed an almost respectable $8 million, but is another film that should be expected to fall quickly out of theaters.

Another new release, WORLD TRADE CENTER, had much better luck. The Oliver Stone film managed a $19 million weekend and considering the Wednesday release, the number is solid. Good reviews seem to have helped, if the film's legs hold up it could manage a $60-70 million total.

The only other news is the great legs that PIRATES continues to show. This franchise is a power house, the film dropped under 35% this weekend and you can expect a total north of $410 million. A huge number.

That's it for this week, until next time ...

1 - TALLADEGA NIGHTS: THE BALLAD OF RICKY BOBBY - $23,000,000 ($91,217,000)
2 - STEP UP - $21,065,000 ($21,065,000)
3 - WORLD TRADE CENTER - $19,016,000 ($26,818,000)
4 - BARNYARD - $10,069,000 ($34,085,000)
5 - PULSE - $8,456,000 ($8,456,000)
6 - PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST - $7,207,000 ($392,400,000)
7 - THE DESCENT - $4,600,000 ($17,527,000)
8 - ZOOM - $4,600,000 ($4,600,000)
9 - MIAMI VICE - $4,547,000 ($55,112,000)

I saw Miami Vice. It is a pretty good movie, but the night shots are badly executed. I heard that this is because they used digital film that just doesn't work well in low light levels. The rest of the film looks great.

Has anyone seen World Trade Center? I'd be interested in what people have to say about that movie.

Also, has anyone seen Ricky Bobby? I heard from a friend that the movie is hilarious, but I have reservations after the incredibly unfunny Sprint ads Will Ferrel (as Ricky Bobby) is in.

Coldhardtruth, if you enjoyed films like 'Dodgeball' and 'Anchorman' then you will enjoy 'Talladega Nights'. It also helps to be a Will Ferrell fan.

I personally loved the film, found it hilarious, and would go see it again. That said, the film is not for everyone and you have to enjoy that type of humor. It is actually my favorite Will Ferrell movie to date.

I'm not up on a lot of my movie lingo I guess. What is a "poor internal weekend multiplier"?

Also, I havn't seen either of the 9/11 movies, but I know they got good reviews. I am curious if they were legit reviews or if people are just not willing to bash something about that day?

I havn't got the chance to see the Ricky Bobby, but I would like to find some way to squeeze it in this week. Ditto with the Pirates and Vice.

Chirop, I haven't seen WTC yet, but I did see Flight 93 in New York, the opening weekend. It was a well done movie. The place was absolutely silent during the crashes and there moments I felt I was at a funeral than a movie. I have a feeling WTC is going to something like that, an emotional rollercoaster.
I really want to see Talladega Nights. Anchorman was funny, and so was Dodgeball.
POTC is still going pretty strong. I wonder if it will hit 400 next weekend?

Cold...I was shocked when I saw WTC. I expected a typical Oliver Stone film filled with convoluted conspiracy theories and just a depressing look at the worst side of humankind. Instead, I came away surprisingly uplifted with tears in my eyes. I definitely recommend the film.

I got dragged by my girl to Ricky Bobby...Let me say up front that I don't like Will Farrell's movies at all (or Ben Stiller's or Owen Wilsons, etc...); find nothing funny in his performances...and I thought it was a pretty funny movie. He works great with John C. Reilly, who is always terrific in his roles.

And what the hell is up with the ending of The Descent? That was just plain dumb...or am I too dense to get it? Can someone tell me the original ending please? I'm hoping it made more sense. i thought it was a pretty good horror movie with a nice buildup to the action.

I had the opportunity to see an andvanced screening of The Illusionist, starring Edward Norton, last week. We were told that the movie will be released September 1. The movie is a bit slow and dark enough in places to make a Tim Burton movie look well-lit, but overall it was a very enjoyable film. Mellon says check it out.

Dont worry Wessmith i did not get the ending to the descent neither. My thought is that she was just hilucinating just like at the beginning of the movie after the car crash.
i thoguth it was an ok movie being that bothign happeend for the 1st hour of the film.... What was the original ending anyway???
Not really a Will Ferrel fan but not sure if i will see this now or DVD....
Any one see Sky High 2.. ohhh i mean Zoom???

chirop, "internal weekend multiplier" takes the total a movie made for the entire weekend (Fri-Sun) then divides it by what the movie made only on Friday to get a ratio. This is used as an indicator for how the studio expects the movie to perform in the long run, rather than basing projections on the entire opening weekend.

The internal weekend multiplier tends to be more accurate, because this helps to nullify the "frontloading" effect of movies which get a large opening night, but then lower to more realistic levels over Sat-Sun. "Frontloading" is most often seen in movies with large built-in audiences, but can also be a result of poor word-of-mouth, where the Friday night audiences don't recommend the movie to their friends, thus reducing the box office for Sat-Sun.
