Weekend Box Office Report: Saw Scares

By: Karl Schneider
Date: Monday, October 30, 2006

Once again proving that it doesn't take a budget north of $100 million to make a lot of money at theaters, the hottest horror franchise easily grabbed the top spot for the weekend managing a healthy $34 million in it's opening weekend. With a budget estimated at $12 million before advertising, Saw III is a lock to turn a very healthy profit as well as spawn a sequel for Halloween 2007.

The Departed continues one of the most amazing box office runs in quite a while, dropping only 26% and leap-frogging The Prestige to nab the second spot with $9.8 million. If you haven't seen the film yet, do yourself a favor and go check it out.

While The Prestige wasn't strong enough to hang onto second place, it put up a great second weekend number in $9.6 million. The drop of only 35% should mean good things for the film's legs in the weeks to come.

Outside of the top three there wasn't a whole lot of action. The Grudge 2 fell hard, as was expected with the direct competition from Saw. Aside from that ... not much to report.

So, until next week ...

1 SAW III $34,300,000 New $34,300,000
2 THE DEPARTED $9,840,000 -26.9% $91,090,000

well this is the kind of movie that impresses me the most... (saw franchise) a very good movie that does very well on a relativity small budget , allot of holywood companies should take advices from them ...but then again with the weakess production of movie in recent history and the lack of creation from most of them makes me doubt that they,ll ever learn anything and just keep giving us allot of junk movies... oh well there's always dvd rentals to save a few bucks on seeing poor movies....

Well, Id say its a success considering it made triple of what the budget for the movie was. Its amazing how these guys can pull such quality work out of their collective ass every year with such a low buget. Too bad others can't do that in their respective genres "ahem, Mr Singer and Ratner"

Here we go with the Singer zingers again...never mind that "Returns" makes "Saw" look like your average B movie crap.

Saw Flags of our fathers. It's ok.
Not Eastwoods best but good.

This new site is freaking me out. Think I liked the old one better for getting around and posting. It was simpler.

It looks like Saw 3 had cut through the competition this past weekend.
