Weekend Box Office Reports: Superman Stumbles

By: Karl Schneider
Date: Monday, July 03, 2006

Any movie that has a price tag over $300 million needs to impress at the box office. We knew we could be in for disappointment when the Wednesday numbers came in, and that has proved true.

SUPERMAN RETURNS has taken its first bow in theaters and came away with just over $52 million for the weekend. The gross is totally plain, and very uninspiring. Can the movie be called a flop? No, it has made $84 million over the first 5 days and strong international numbers will help, but it will go down as a disappointment unless it can somehow find the legs that BATMAN BEGINS did. Next weekend will tell the tale for this movie.

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA also opened this weekend and managed to rake in $27 million for the weekend. The gross is higher than expected and very solid.

The good opening for PRADA helped CLICK drop over 50% for the weekend, down to $19 million. CARS continues to hold well.

The remaining numbers are as boring and bland as the ones SUPERMAN RETURNS turned in so until next week ...

1 - Superman Returns - $52,150,000 ($84,208,000)
2 - The Devil Wears Prada - $27,000,000 ($27,000,000)
3 - Click - $19,400,000 ($77,918,000)
4 - Cars - $14,035,000 ($182,056,000)
5 - Nacho Libre - $6,186,000 ($64,959,000)
6 - The Lake House - $4,510,000 ($38,735,000)
7 - The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift - $4,432,000 ($51,666,000)
8 - Waist Deep - $3,312,000 ($15,175,000)
9 - The Break-Up - $2,830,000 ($110,069,000)
10 - The Da Vinci Code - $2,300,000 ($209,793,000)

Just saw it in Sydney, Australia. Great flick. I think it will grow legs and sprout big time once word gets around. Most of my friends are like "yeah, I'm gonna see it this weekend". Remember, not everybody rushes out to see it the first weekend. This is one of those flicks that everyone will enjoy. I'm a huge Batman Begins fan and this was as good as Begins but in a Superman kind of way. I left with that nice, innocent kind of feeling that I haven't felt in awhile. One that 'Smallville' can't even produce.

The first hour rocked. It was a bit long but there was only one cheesy part to it but I won't spoil it. Those the saw it will know what I'm talking about. Great flick. I plan on seeing it again.

Which cheesy part? Okay, okay, no spoilers. =)

I loved the movie. Yes a bit long but it was great!!! I don't thin the numers are diappointing. Batman begins did lower in its opening weekend so where is the logic there? And I think it would have done bigger if it did not open on Wednesday. Critics seemt o forget its oening was spread out over 5 days. But who cares really about BO numbers. The movei rocked!! Gald to see my fav superhero back.

Ok maybe I do care about BO... Did they even consider that it opened on Wednesday and that if it opened on Fiday then it would have been 84 for the weekend. Do they not condiser that? Batman opened lower in its opening so that is ok? Damn I hat critics.

Of course the Wednesday opening is considered. Big movies overcome such things, Superman did not. The box office is a complex thing, I have been a student of it's numbers for a long time. Those accustomed to the box office and it's intricacies will understand that this gross is disappointing.

I understand that you enjoy the movie, love it even, but that does not make it's gross any better. This movie cost the studio well over 300m to make, but if it re-launches the franchise, it will be money well spent.

The movie is not a failure, but it is a lack luster start. It will re-launch the franchise, and in that respect it can be considered a success.

The fact that SUPERMAN RETURNS will now have to struggle to make 200m domestically can be seen as nothing but a negative.

i saw superman yesterday and thought it was off the hook. man the special effects were HOT!!!!! i especially liked how they were sticky some of the styles and music from the original with christopher reeves. very nice touch. and kevin spacey wooooooo my man was on fire with the role. i knew he would pull it off cause he is just a off the hook actor. cant wait to see who superman goes against in part 2. hopefully brainiac. but not doomsday tooooooo soon for that.

The big difference between Batman Begins and Superman Returns is that Batman Begins doesn't have 15 years of baggage of paying out various writers and directors for scripts that were tossed out and so forth. Which is why the price tag is rumored to have been around $300 million, instead of less than half that, which is what it should've cost to make this movie.

I agree, it rocked. I remained spoiler free so I could see this with untainted eyes and loved it. Go see it and tell your friends about it. There were scenes in it that gave me goose bumps like one where Supes is descending into the Fortress. It looked amazing.

The movie's whole storyline has been there, done that feel to it, which is what kiiled it for me. And the fact whole movie is a sufficating bore.

Warner has to be real disappointed today with those numbers. They promoted it endlessly and were probably expecting at least $120-25 million. I really enjoyed the movie and thought there were moments of brilliance, but dragon261 is right...there was a lot of been there, done that feel. I loved the nods to the original movies and Williams' music mixed into the new score though. Spacey was great as Lex, but the whole real estate angle wasn't that exciting. And for...

SPOILER - for those who haven't see it

...Superman's son; I really didn't like that angle at all. I understand Singer making this movie as a comment about orphans like his X-Men films were about acceptance for differences. In the next film, kill off the kid and Lois' fiance and have her blame Big Blue. Third movie they come together again and he shares hsi dual identity with her. The next movies must have Superman actually fight a bad guy (ala Matrix 3); someone who can hurt him, not just show him some kryptonite.

The movie was entertaining though, and the effects were terrific. The shuttle rescue was fantastic! I'll be seeing it again tomorrow with my girl's kids.
