The Weinstein Co. has picked up the rights to Ernesto Foronda's adaptation of Ryan Gattis' novel KUNG FU HIGH SCHOOL.

The story centers on a high school where the students matriculate in bloody martial-arts mayhem. Nicknamed Kung Fu High, the school is a prisonlike venue ruled by five gangs, each of which employs a stylized ancient Asian martial-arts discipline.

The young adult novel was published by Harvest Books in September 2005.

Does anyone know if the novel this is based on is related in any way to "Volcano High"??? A tres cool Korean movie with pretty much EXACTLY the same premise?? Anyone else seen it???

I thought I would be the only one to spot the similarity to Volcano High.

Let's not forget Harry Potter... a school for wizards.

I was thinking of "Volcano High" too when I read this. But I have to ask a question: which version of Volcano High do I pick up? The MTV-a-fied one where they dub rappers over the dialogue or the Korean language one? I'm not sure of the MTV one cut some scenes to fit their time slot...

wow i guess its true hollywood has run out of ideas. kind of like stephen king

Harry Potter isn't a school, silly. Kidding aside though, it might be derivative, but that doesn't mean it still can't be good. I'll hold out judging it until O know more. Of course, I am unfamiliar with Volcano High, so I can't be sure how much a knock-off this will be.

I saw the MTV version, hopefully the original Korean version is better. I hear it is. I also heard that the MTV version cut alot of the movie out for some reason.

I have the original Korean version and I recommend it. There is actually Korean rap in the original. While I don't understand a word of it, it works well with the movie. It runs a little long sometimes, but it is worth it. Another movie to check out if you like this stuff is Arahan. It doesn't hurt that the girl in that is just gorgeous.
