Weinstein's to split "Grindhouse"?

By: Karl Schneider
Date: Tuesday, April 10, 2007

According to Variety, The Weinsteins are considering splitting Grindhouse into two separate films (Planet Terror and Death Proof) when it releases in future countries.

The move comes on the heels of a very disappointing opening weekend gross, which came in far below analyst expectations despite good reviews.

The move is reportedly being made not only in hopes of salvaging a profit from the films theatrical run, but also because the idea of a 'grindhouse' would be foreign to most non-American markets.

The movies are expected to continue to play together in domestic markets.

Regardless what you think about his acting ability, I think we can all agree Kurt Russell is box office poison!

Grindhouse was a decent flick too, shame.

well that and not many people want to sit there through 2 movies...i mean, 3:30hrs of b movie action....i dont know, maybe its just me...plus i think it made slow many cuz theaters can only run soo many showings... hey karl

I think the main reason this didn't do as well as it should was that it was released during Easter weekend... where families are going to see crap movies like "Are We Done Yet?"

Plus, releasing it after a Disney animated film or a Will Ferrell movie is not smart either.

I want "Big Trouble in Little Russia" or something.

Its too bad, splitting the movie in two defeats the whole purpose of why the film was made in the first place.

At least us in North America got to see it as it was meant to be seen for a little while anyway. The poor guys over seas wont get even that because the Weinstein's seem to think double features, exploitation films and dirty rundown theaters filled with seedy characters are something that didn't exist out side the states.
They my not have used the term "Grindhouse" over seas but the same movie experiance could be found there too back in the 70's.

The plan of splitting the european run of the film has alway been about maximizing the profit and its to bad 'cause it'll disappoint a lot of people over there.

kurt russel is a box office poison if you look at the short life movie....i agree, if you look at the long term, Kurt russel can help you to cross centuries of time. Things is still running as dvd everywhere in the world, more than twenty years after, but when he was release, it was poison, depends of point of view....

When Kill Bill was split, it made sense. Both volumes had a different flavour. Splitting Grindhouse up kind of defeats the purpose of the 'double-bill' scheme. I haven't seen it yet, but maybe they could reduce the 'faux' trailers (save them for the DVD), and condense ALL of the credits to roll after the 2nd movie.

Karl, regardless of your seemingly personal grudge against Russell, the seeming lack of success shows that audience were looking for family fare on the Holiday weekend, not that he's any sort of box office poison. This next weekend will be the sign of whether or not Grindhouse has legs.

originaldave77, that sounds like their best bet. Reduce the run time for more showings; makes life a little easier on the average audience expecting a 2 hr. standard flick. Splitting one movie people aren't flocking to is only likely to create two movies people aren't flocking to.

I don't think Russell had anything to do with the lackluster performance of Grindhouse. It's an R rated movie making its entrance on a strong family holiday weekend with a 3 hour running time which limits showings. Those two factors led more to the lackluster box office numbers more than Kurt Russell's name (were you trolling there, Karl?). Grindhouse was promoted more for the directors than the actors involved. Everyone involved had to know that this would have a somewhat limited appeal, so I think they're banking on DVD sales to really push their numbers. I think the movie will do better this weekend.

Splitting the movies into individual releases does defeat the theme and idea behind Grindhouse, but maybe most European moviegoers wouldn't "get it." I don't know, I wasn't in Europe in the 70s.

We pretty much analyzed to death the box office performance of Grindhouse on yesterday's box office report, and I noticed Kurt Russell's name didn't appear once as a probably cause. I do believe Karl is trying to stoke the flames again.

Wes, I don't think that quite everybody involved with Grindhouse saw the limited appeal. According to what I read, Harvey Weinstein believed it should have opened at about $20M, which I would have thought was reasonable given the marketing blitz behind it. Despite the running time and R-rating, I think it could have done $20M if they had opened on any other weekend other than Easter, and released it on Wednesday night to give it some added momentum going into the weekend.

I also have to agree with the other posts here that splitting the movie defeats the purpose of recreating the Grindhouse experience.
