Peter Weller has become the latest actor to be selected for J.J. Abrams' untitled Star Trek sequel, with Variety reporting the RoboCop star has been chosen for a yet-to-be-revealed role in the follow-up adventure to the 2009 reboot.

He joins John Cho, Simon Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, Benicio Del Toro and Alice Eve. Del Toro will play the villain while Eve is set to play a new character in the production which is expected to begin shooting early next year.

Abrams will once again be behind the camera, based on a scripted adventure by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof. They will also be producing alongside Bryan Burk and David Ellison via Bad Robot and Skydance Productions.

The Star Trek sequel flies into theaters May 17, 2013.

Cool. He even has some Star Trek history because he was in some episodes of Enterprise.

During the weekend there was some back and forth speculation that DelToro was playing Khan which JJ quickly denied. I wouldn't mind bringing Khan back and since this is an alternate timeline they could use the character in new ways.

Oh and Alicia Eve is scrumptious so it'll be cool having her in this too.

Looking forward to this. I thought Abrams' last Trek film was great...except for all the lens flares! Ow, my eyes! Saw "Super 8" last weekend...again with the lens flares!! Let's hope JJ falls out of love with that technique before he films the next Trek. Weller is an intelligent and compelling actor. His appearance on "Fringe" last year was most welcome. One of that show's most poignant episodes.

Can't say if this will make any difference. A good actor in a bad film dosen't save the film.  Weller is ok in my book but JJ's a hack in the Trek Universe. I like JJ in most other respects but he has  skill i the Trek Universe except to dumb it down for those who never understood Roddenberry's vision. Basicly cut out the heart and bleed the soul dry of any feeling.  Stuff the carcass with high tech explosions and fast action. Water it down further with a lack of understanding of the characters and no development of a THOUGHTFUL script. Crap it out and there you have it JJ Abrams Star Trek.

dang typos,,, JJ has NO Skill IN the Trek Universe...

Wiseguy,

Why would you want to see Khan Redux in this new Star Trek series?  I think it's a terrible idea.  Wrath of Khan would never have resonated as much as a film had it not been preceded by the episode Space Seed and had 15 years in between the episode and film.  Two of the key themes in the film is about getting older and coping with death - neither of which could really be done with this young crew.  In a film where the writers have complete freedom to do anything they want, why try to remake Wrath of Khan?  Why not simply create an entirely new threat to the characters?  Sure, they could add in Klingons in the mix as well, but I just don't get why most Trek fans on this site (and other sites) want to see a new rendition of Khan.

I hope that they use piracy as part of the storyline in the next film. It's something that was never really explored in the original series but was mentioned in passing.

I agree with you jackwagon.  There is no reason for this version of the Star Trek crew to revisit the Kahn character.  ST II, was, by far, the best of the series.  And, like you said, it dealt a lot with aging and death.  I think this new version has the luxury of going where,um, no film before it has gone before.  Instead of just relying on good vibes from the reintroduction of characters and the return of a Nimoy, they need to tell a very mind blowing sci fi story.  Less of the silly cartoonish situations and more of an engaging, thought provoking story... which is really what is at the heart of most ST loyalists.

no lens flares = i am happy

lusiphur 12/5/2011 1:50:25 PM

InnerSanctum - as long as that engaging, thought provoking story does not resemble Star Trek V.

I do agree, no Khan except possibly in passing (a news feed or such).  Give us Klingons.  Give us Harry Mudd.  Give us some of McCoy's ex-girlfriends.
