Whedon Talks Avenger Sequel

Whedon wants more character turmoil in Avengers sequel.

Half a year after Joss Whedon unleashed pyrotechnic delight on the Cleveland set for Marvel's The Avengers, the helmer has discussed what he would like to see in the sequel should he be in charge. And it involves less explosions. While talking to SFX (via Digital Spy), Whedon had this to say on being in charge of the first superhero team effort and what he would like to see in a follow-up.

On taking the directing gig in the first place:

"I want to know what makes them tick, what makes them flawed, what makes them fight - and ultimately, what makes them awesome," Whedon says of his superhero team. "I go to these movies for those moments when the heroes define themselves, either through action or deliciously overwritten speeches."

On his thoughts for surpassing the first with a sequel:

"By not trying to. By being smaller. More personal, more painful... By being the next thing that should happen to these characters, and not just a rehash of what seemed to work the first time. By having a theme that is completely fresh and organic to itself."

Marvel's The Avengers flies into theaters on May 4, 2012.

Here's the latest trailer:

I cannot wait

He's got my vote. The question is will Marvel give him that vote of confidence or will they do as they did Favreau and try to rein him in. I hope they realize that sometimes you have to trust your guys

Btw, the trailer looked amazing in I-Max 3D in  fron of JC.

55days 20hrs 40min....can't wait

I'd just like to say I like it when a sequel is announced before the first movie is out. It shows that everyone is hoping to keep a story or characters moving along with confidence and have ideas to move storylines forward. First things first, just wanna see the first, first.

Guess Joss Whedon could do the whole Black Widow double-agent / Hawkeye framed thing.  That could be fun to watch.  As long as he doesn't go over the top with the melodrama..please no big screen Smallville clone.

Probably the most consistent writer/producer/director through tv and movies.  I honestly can't name anything with his name on it that I didn't love or at least like, including Dollhouse.  The guy is just pure entertainment talent.  This is equivilant to Sam Raimi getting Spiderman, and I'm sure the success will be equal if not greater than for Joss Whedon!  He'll get the sequel, and I bet he'll get his way and deliver something we'd never see coming!

If there is a sequal to Avengers it will probably be without RDJ as IM/Stark. I don't see him doing the role again beyond IM3.

ElBaz13 3/9/2012 6:47:14 AM

Even if RDJ is out of the question for IM in Avengers 2, the great thing about the franchise is that he can be replaced by another superhero.

Ant Man, Wasp, Vision, Wonder Man...etc...The possibilities are endless. Hell, even Spidey if Sony Pictures fails and Marvel reacquires the rights.

No Dr Druid.though.

SarcasticCaveman 3/9/2012 7:27:21 AM

Oh come on, why wouldn't Robert Downey, Jr. play Tony Stark for Avengers 2?  He's already done it for two Iron Man movies AND two Sherlock Holmes movies!  IF they were to proceed without him for some reason, the only other badass Avenger I can think of who could fill the void left by the iron Avenger would be SQUIRREL GIRL...or any of the Great Lakes Avengers.

vagabondster 3/9/2012 7:27:56 AM

From the trailers I can already tell the Avengers will be every fanboys wet dream. Who hasnt imagined a movie like this ever happening? And herre it comes..
