"Welcome back to the biggest surprise of my career," a smiling Joss Whedon told reporters Friday as he sat down to discuss Season Two of Dollhouse. "I really didn't expect to be sitting here again. It's been like skiing in a cartoon: up and down, up and down, up and down."
Surrounded by the Dollhouse cast, including star Eliza Dushku, Whedon talked about the challenges facing the show in the new season and the ways he believes it will be improved.

"Before, it was an idea that we had a lot of trouble defining--and America got to watch that. Now, we feel like it is defined. The network understands what it is, we understand what it is, and we know what our cast is capable of, which is wonders.

"[This season] Echo starts really realizing not only that she exists as a person, but that she has something she wants. This year we're going to see the results of everything she went through last year, particularly the event with Alpha, where she was downloaded with all her personalities. We're going to see the effect that's had on her, and we're going to find her a great deal less passive."

When asked about the unexpected reprieve for a show which has struggled in the ratings, Whedon was quick to give credit to his fan base, whose loyalty appeared through new means such as DVR recordings and potential DVD sales.

"The fans made themselves heard, but all they did was make themselves heard by loving [the show], by DVRing it, by putting numbers up that aren't the traditional Nielsen numbers. There was no angry campaign, there was no 'send them bottles of something,' there wasn't any of that. It was just… the studio understanding that the math of television is different than it used to be."

He and the cast were resolutely mum about some of the surprises awaiting this season, but with the first episode wrapping up shooting, it's fair to say that Dollhouse contains more than its share of new twists.

"[Echo] has a cohesiveness and a mission that makes every engagement mean a great deal more to her, and she has--as Echo--her own agenda, which she didn't quite have [last season]… We're going to see Echo as we know her, and then we're going to see something very different, and that's pretty much all I can say at this point."

Dollhouse's second season is scheduled to begin airing in September.

What can I say?  Eliza Dushku back at work in the Whedonverse!  Now maybe a Vampire personality will arise and Buffy will come slay it.  Too Much?

Yaayy!  This show really started hitting its stride toward the end of the season. I'm jacked to see where it goes.  But I'll miss Mellie.  Hope Alpha is around for a good bit of S2.

I really love this show, but I have tons of questions about the "contracts" that the Dolls sign.  How do they explain a 5 year absence from the world?  Isn't the Corporation concerned that they will tell someone about the Dollhouse once their contract is over?  We've already seen them release November from her contract and we saw her, or at least we seemed to, simply sign some papers and happily leave the building.

The show is really good.  I hope they do a better job marketing it to women because in the end thats what will help it survive ... and every woman that I know that's watched it really liked it.

I love this show, and not just because I'm a huge Eliza stalk... I mean, fan.

Whedon has really created another interesting universe with a lot of interesting philosophical questions to it.  This show has SO much untapped potential.  I can't wait to see where Season 2 goes.

I don't think the Dolls will tell about the Dollhouse when they leave, because their memories are wiped of it.  I think they implied that an imprint was taken when they become Dolls, then that imprint is given back to them upon leaving.  As far as explaining their absence, the people they tend to use are pretty much loners and don't have a lot of people around that need explaining to.

Fox should have issued another season for Sarah Conner, to fix up the mess of the time line. It just needed six to eight episodes.
