Actor Johnny Whitworth has been attached to the cast for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance for well over a year but with the recent revelations that he's set to play the comic hero's nemesis, Blackout, fans have been looking forward to hear from Johnny on the role. And Scott Huver over at Shock Til You Drop was kind enough to sit down with the actor to pick his thoughts on playing the villain in the Ghost Rider sequel.

While confirming that production on the sequel wrapped up four days ago in Turkey, Whitworth explained the coolest aspect of being part of Mark Neveldine/ Brian Taylor (Crank, Gamer) production:

Question: Yeah, so tell me a little bit about what was cool about that experience for you?

Whitworth:
Oh, Nic Cage, Nic Cage and Nic Cage because Nic Cage is awesome. I got to be a comic book character. I mean that's part of the partial reason why I got into- not to be a comic, but the things that inspired me as a youngster, the things and the things that I was into, one being comics and of that nature and pretend and that's the ultimate way. Because he's bad and I get to be even extra bad. So I'm human and then I turn into Blackout and then he's bad and then he's just horrible.

Question: Did you read the 'Ghost Rider' comic books? I guess the '90s were one of the hey days and then like back in the '70s, too.

Whitworth:
Right. You know to be honest with you, I didn't really. My little brother did and that's where I got my influence before I knew him. My little brother was into 'Ghost Rider'. I was 'Batman'. Not to switch-

Question: Superheroes on me?

Whitworth:
Yeah, well, superheroes is okay. But there's a different brand. There's Marvel and there's DC. And I just jumped into a different universe. So that might have been bad. Next time I'll prepare not to do that.

Read the rest of the interview here, where Whitworth almost went into spoiler territories for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. The sequel also stars Cage, Ciaran Hinds, Violante Placido and Idris Elba. Neveldine and Taylor co-wrote the Columbia Pictures production.

Plot Concept: The story centers on Johnny Blaze, aka Ghost Rider (Cage), hiding out in remote Eastern Europe and struggling to repress his curse. Blaze is recruited by a sect to take on the devil (Ciaran Hinds), who wants to take over his mortal son's body on the kid's birthday.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance will ride into 3D/2D theaters February 17, 2012.

I think I'm the only one here at Mania that liked the first Ghostrider. I'll be seeing this one as well!

Didn't hate it but felt Cage and Menedez had no chemistry. Looked cool but was just lacking.

didnt care much for the 1st ghost rider movie but i won't hold it against the people making the new one...Nic Cage has had a little experience now and some feedback for the role this time, I'm sure he wants to improve whatever he can...i'm really diggin' the european setting, the new bike,  and calling it the spirit of vengeance really makes me wonder if Vengeance will be in this movie...

honestly tho...all optimism aside...i think Ghost Rider should be an R-Rated, badass, horror/fantasy action flick...lots of practical gore effects, dark hellish backgrounds, freaky demons/devils and Ghost Rider tearing evil a new @sshole...probably never happen tho....o well....have to wait for an eventual trailer before i really start trying to make up my mind on this one...fingers crossed it doesn't suck....

I'm looking forward to watching it but why is it going to take so long to finish it if they already finished filming?

I enjoyed the first one, but it really wasn't as killer as it could and should have been. I loved the comics so they captured part of the spirit in the first... this second one has me a little more, how do I say, skittish or cautious about it being any better and possibly being worse... A couple things bother me though, this directing duo is "tweaking" the origin of GR. Which...was the one thing the first one got right...it's not broken, or was done poorly, so leave it be.... and the other is the selection of villains. Don't get me wrong Blackout is a top fav of mine but I need to see footage before I know how I feel about how Blackout is translated to the screen....

Special f/x and editing... mostly special f/x....we are talking about a burning skull here amongst what is probably over a 100 cgi intensive scenes... ;)

@Gauley - No not the only one.  I own it and thought it was pretty good.  I have no issues with Nic except his crazy transformation scene.  But I'm looking forward to this one too.

Wiseguy 3/24/2011 12:37:12 PM

I know quite a few people that liked GR, I don't where this "I'm the only one" talk is coming from.

I still wish Cage wasn't involved

Ghost Rider was just ok for me. Didn't suck and it was cool to see the character on the big screen, but Cage didn't seem right for the role and he had absolutely no chemistry with Mendes. I don't know if I'll see this one when it hits theaters.

UltimateTypeface 3/24/2011 6:27:25 PM

They should make Ghost Rider more like a horror movie than a rom-com and it would be a whole lot cooler franchise.

They should ditch Nic Cage too (even if he is a fanboy). He isnt intense enough for Johhny Blaze.

I like Mendes however....mmmmm Mendes.
